Modern contrasted serif with swash

Mewah

Mewah is a modern serif in cream on red silk: very high contrast, fine hairlines, a tall narrow waist, and an italic-flavoured swash that lifts off the first letter and curls over the word, so the plate reads as a fashion masthead rather than a book face.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Mewah.

The word is set once, wide, and the drawing is a contrasted serif with an italic accent: the stems are heavy, the hairlines are fine, and the terminals taper into points, while two letters carry an entry and an exit swash that arcs above the word. The swashes are drawn as part of the skeleton rather than added, so the word keeps its rhythm, and the tight spacing lets the lockup read as a plate. Because the hairlines are fine, the face needs a large size and a smooth ground, and the specimen supplies both with a red silk photograph behind. Beneath the word a caption in small caps names the category, and a thin rule carries three tracked notes at the foot, which is the way a contemporary specimen page presents a single display cut.

Brand & packaging

Masthead for a fashion label

A contrasted serif with a swash reads as luxury at small sizes, and the single swash gives a short brand name a signature without an ornament or a monogram.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the masthead at 24 pt on a label and 110 mm wide on a shopfront, with a 7 pt tracked descriptor. Keep one colour, allow 6 mm clear under the swash at label size, and shorten it below 16 pt.

Pre-production check

Check the 16 pt label, where hairlines can drop below 0.2 mm; keep the size above 18 pt or use the shortened swash. Confirm the shopfront version weeds cleanly and that the descriptor stays legible.

Wedding

Invitation for a modern wedding

A contrasted serif reads as formal without a script, and the swash gives the couple's names a single point of interest on a quiet card.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A5 invitation: the names at 26 pt, the request in a 10 pt serif at 14 pt leading, and the date at 9 pt caps. Keep 22 mm margins, leave 12 mm clear above the swash, and letterpress one ink on a heavy card.

Pre-production check

Check the 26 pt names on the stock, where fine serifs can sink; proof the plate. Confirm the 10 pt request reads at arm's length and that the swash does not collide with the line above.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a fashion issue

A contrasted masthead is the expected language of a fashion cover, and the swash lets a short title hold a large area without a second graphic element.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the masthead at 110 mm cap height across 220 mm, the cover lines in an 8 pt serif, and the issue details at 7 pt. Keep the masthead over a quiet area of the photograph and put the cover lines in the lower third.

Pre-production check

Check the masthead at 110 mm, where the hairlines can break on the press; keep them above 0.3 mm. Confirm the cover lines read at newsstand distance and that the masthead holds at thumbnail size.
