Visual anatomy & craft review
William Jameson is a slanted signature cursive with a sweeping underline swash: a fast forward-leaning stroke, letters joined at the baseline, and a long flat swash that draws under the whole name and lifts at the end. The swash is the design, so the face needs a wide measure rather than a square panel. The swash thins are the finest element and they break first in print and in foil. It needs roughly 30 mm for the swash and the slant to read, and it is best one dark ink on a smooth stock.

A slanted signature with an underline swash reads as a hand-signed mark rather than a corporate logo. The swash holds at 28 mm on a card, and one ink prints the card and the decal in one order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Card 85 x 55 mm, signature 28 mm with 12 mm swash clearance, details 7/9 pt, 8 mm margins. Van decal 400 x 150 mm, signature 60 mm, 20 mm margins. Sticker 90 x 60 mm, word 22 mm, 5 mm die margin.
Pre-production check
On a 90 x 60 mm sticker the swash runs past the die line and gets trimmed. Keep the swash 6 mm inside the cut, and punch one sticker before the batch.
A signature swash says thank you with a drawn line rather than a printed graphic. The swash holds at 28 pt, and one ink prints the card and the tags in one pass.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Card A6, signature 28 pt with 12 mm swash clearance, note 8/11 pt, 14 mm margins. Note slip 148 x 105 mm, signature 24 mm, 12 mm margins. Gift tag 50 x 90 mm, word 16 mm, 3 mm hole clearance.
Pre-production check
On a 50 x 90 mm tag the swash and the hole punch collide and the tag tears at the corner. Keep the hole 3 mm clear and the swash 6 mm below it, and punch one tag before the batch.
A slanted signature with an underline swash gives a relaxed wedding a hand-signed invitation rather than an engraved one. The swash holds at 30 pt, and the details set in a text face at 9 pt.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invitation 130 x 180 mm, names 30 pt with 12 mm swash clearance, details 9/13 pt, 18 mm margins. Menu 120 x 210 mm, head 20 pt, courses 9/12 pt. Place card 90 x 50 mm, name 16 pt, 4 mm margins.
Pre-production check
At 16 pt on a place card the swash closes into a bar under the name. Raise cards to 22 pt, and proof one card before the suite.
