Modern handwritten script with high contrast

Whiskey

Whiskey is a modern handwritten script in black on white fabric: a thick downstroke and a thin upstroke, a capital W that swings across the whole word, tall loops on the h and the k, and a y that drops a long tail back under the line.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Whiskey.

The word is set across the middle of the frame and the drawing is a calligraphic hand written quickly: the downstrokes are heavy, the upstrokes are hairlines, and the joins are continuous, so the word reads as one movement rather than as separate letters. The capital W is the widest form in the face, drawn with two long diagonals that nearly reach the ascenders, and the lowercase is small by comparison, which is what gives the word its sweeping look. The descender of the y curls left and tapers, and the spacing is loose enough that the loops do not collide even at small sizes. The ground is a plain white fabric with soft shadows, and the caption below is set in small tracked capitals, so the page is a clean presentation of a script meant for signage, packaging and social graphics.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Whiskey’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Mark for a bar or restaurant

A bold handwritten script gives a venue a signature that reads from a menu cover and from a window, because the heavy downstrokes hold at both sizes.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the mark at 40 pt for the menu, 20 pt for the receipt and 80 mm wide for the window decal. Keep the whole mark one colour and leave clear space equal to the height of the capital W on every side.

Pre-production check

Check the 80 mm window decal in vinyl, where the thin upstrokes may not survive weeding; thicken them for the cut. Confirm the 20 pt receipt version still reads and that the mark is legible from the pavement at 15 m.

Editorial & posters

Pull quote for a nightlife feature

A script line gives a nightlife feature a voice that a roman cannot, and the heavy downstrokes mean the quote still reads at the small sizes a magazine uses.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the quote at 36 pt on a 100 mm measure, the attribution in an 8 pt sans caps beneath at 8 mm, and a 0.5 pt rule above at 14 mm. Keep the script to two lines and set it on a plain field rather than over a photograph.

Pre-production check

Check the two-line version for the loops colliding, which is the usual failure of a bold script at small sizes. Confirm the 8 pt attribution keeps a 4.5:1 contrast and that the rule clears the tallest ascender by 10 mm.

Wedding

Names on a relaxed invitation

A bold script suits an informal wedding and stays legible for older guests, which a hairline calligraphy often does not at the same size.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the names at 26 pt on one line, the details in a 9 pt sans beneath, and the date in a 7.5 pt caps. Keep 15 mm margins and print one ink on a warm stock so the heavy strokes read as ink rather than as a graphic.

Pre-production check

Check the names at 26 pt on the card, where the heavy W can overpower a shorter surname; reduce the size difference rather than the weight. Confirm the 9 pt details and 7.5 pt date both keep a 4.5:1 contrast and clear the descenders.
