Vintage western slab with inline shadow

Western Cinema

Western Cinema is a vintage western slab in cream and mustard on aged paper: heavy bracketed serifs, an inline notch down the centre of each stroke, a solid offset shadow in a second colour, and a framed plate with stars at the corners, so the pair reads as a printed film poster.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Western Cinema.

Two words are stacked and the drawing is a western slab with two layers: the letter is drawn as an inline outline, and a solid fill sits behind it offset down and left, which builds depth without a gradient. The serifs are heavy and bracketed, the stems flare slightly, and the corners of the frame carry stars, so the whole plate reads as a period poster rather than as a specimen. Spacing is even and tight, which lets the two lines lock into one block, and the inline stays open at large sizes, which is what keeps the word readable from a distance. The ground is an aged paper with a desert scene at the foot, and the small caption sits in a banner between the words and the landscape.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Western Cinema’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Sign for a barbecue smokehouse

A layered western slab reads as a hand-painted sign from the road, and the two-colour build means the sign can be cut from vinyl without a photographic print.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Fabricate a 1,400 by 600 mm board: the name at 180 mm cap height, the inline at 8 mm, the offset at 10 mm, and the hours in a 30 mm sans. Keep 40 mm margins and paint two colours on a dark board.

Pre-production check

Check the inline at 8 mm on the board, where a narrower notch reads as damage; keep it above 6 mm. Confirm the 30 mm hours read at five metres and that the offset does not touch the letter behind it.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a film retrospective

A layered western slab frames a retrospective as a period poster, and the offset layer gives a cover depth without a photograph behind the title.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 90 mm cap height across 230 mm, the subtitle in a 12 pt roman, and the season at 9 pt caps. Print two inks on an aged stock and keep the frame and stars as the only ornament behind the title.

Pre-production check

Check the title at thumbnail size, where the inline and offset can blur into one shape; keep the contrast between the two inks high. Confirm the 9 pt season survives lamination and that the title clears the trim.

Birthday

Invitation for a cinema party

A period western slab turns a film-themed party into a poster, and the two inks print cleanly on a home press at card size without halftones.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the phrase at 28 pt, the details in a 9 pt roman, and a 3 mm frame with small corner stars. Keep 12 mm margins and print two flat colours on a cream card so the inline stays open.

Pre-production check

Check the 28 pt phrase, where the inline can close at card size; keep the size above 24 pt for this treatment. Confirm the 9 pt details keep a 4.5:1 contrast and that the stars do not touch the frame.
