Visual anatomy & craft review
Vintage Story is a slanted archival dip-pen signature script: a steep slant, a high-contrast stroke with a swollen downstroke and a hairline exit, and capitals that loop back over the word. The dip pen leaves occasional thick entries, and the hairline exits are the weakest part in print. It needs roughly 24 mm for the entry swell and the hairline to read, and it is best in one brown-black on buff stock, or a single faded blue on cream to mimic an old letter.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Vintage Story’s stroke geometry.
A dip-pen signature reads as a document rather than a styled headline, which is what an archive feature wants at the top. The swollen entry holds at 36 pt, and the hairline exits keep the facsimile honest on a printed page.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 36 pt with 10 mm exit clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt, 18 mm margins. Facsimile signature 40 x 15 mm, 8 pt caption.
Pre-production check
At 40 mm the hairline exits print as broken threads on an uncoated sheet and the signature looks damaged. Use a smooth stock or raise the signature to 55 mm, and proof one page at 1:1.
A dip-pen signature reads as a written mark rather than a logo, which is what a small print shop wants on its letterhead. The entry swell holds at 22 mm, and one brown-black ink prints the card and the letterhead in one order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Card 85 x 55 mm, word 20 mm with 8 mm exit clearance, details 7/9 pt, 5 mm margins. Letterhead 210 x 297 mm, word 30 mm, 20 mm margins. Stamp 50 x 20 mm, word 8 mm, 2 mm margin.
Pre-production check
A 50 x 20 mm rubber stamp at 8 mm fills the hairline into a smudge and the mark reads as a blot. Keep stamps at 12 mm and above, and test one impression before the order.
A dip-pen signature gives a wedding the look of a hand-signed document rather than an engraved plate. The steep slant keeps a long name on one line at 28 pt, and one brown-black ink prints the suite on buff stock.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invitation 130 x 180 mm, names 28 pt with 10 mm exit clearance, details 9/13 pt, 15 mm margins. Vow card 105 x 148 mm, header 18 pt, text 9/12 pt. Order of service 105 x 148 mm, text 8/11 pt.
Pre-production check
At 8 pt in the order of service the dip-pen hairlines vanish and the text reads as pale marks. Raise the text to 9.5 pt, and proof one booklet before the set.
