Condensed distressed athletic slab

Varsity Distressed

Varsity Distressed is a condensed athletic slab in white on a stadium photograph: heavy caps with narrow counters and flat slabs, chipped and speckled through the fill, set on four lines in decreasing sizes with a tracked line between them and a credit at the foot.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Varsity Distressed.

The plate stacks four lines and the drawing is a condensed slab with a distressed fill: the chips are cut into the letters rather than applied as a texture over the whole design, so the face reproduces as a single screen with the wear built in. That construction is why it works on a shirt or a banner, where a printed texture would sit on top of the ink instead of in it. The four lines step down in size, which shows the face at display and at secondary sizes, and the stadium photograph gives context without competing because it is dark at the centre. The tracked line between the blocks is set in a plain face. Because the counters are narrow, the face needs a large size at the smaller weights, and the plate is a fair demonstration of the range.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Varsity Distressed’s stroke geometry.

Classroom & school

Banner for a football season

A distressed slab reads as a worn stadium banner, and the chipped fill prints in one pass without adding a separate texture layer over the ink.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 1,500 by 550 mm: the team at 180 mm cap height, the season in a 40 mm slab, and one ink on a dark vinyl. Keep 32 mm margins and keep the chips above 3 mm so they do not tear.

Pre-production check

Check the banner at twelve metres, where a 3 mm chip can vanish; keep them above 6 mm. Confirm the 40 mm season reads at six metres and that the eyelets clear the block.

Brand & packaging

Sign for a sports bar

A worn athletic face suits a bar with a sports theme, and the single-colour construction keeps a small sign budget realistic.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Paint a 1,000 by 380 mm board: the bar at 110 mm cap height, the fixtures in a 22 mm sans, and one colour on a dark primed board. Keep 25 mm margins and keep the wear even.

Pre-production check

Check the board at five metres, where the distress can read as peeling paint; keep the chips small. Confirm the 22 mm fixtures read at two metres and that the paint holds outdoors.

Birthday

Shirt graphic for a game day

A distressed block prints as one screen and looks worn from the first wash, which suits a casual game-day shirt more than a crisp block would.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 250 mm chest graphic: the slogan at 55 mm cap height, the year at 30 mm, and one ink on a mid-toned shirt. Keep the narrowest counter at 4 mm and place the graphic 80 mm below the collar.

Pre-production check

Check the screen at actual mesh, where a 4 mm counter can fill; open the spacing. Wash-test one shirt and confirm the chips stay open after five cycles.
