Wide geometric variable sans

University

Mechacore is a wide geometric sans in black on yellow: square extended letters, a flat-topped C, a stencil variant, five weights from light to bold, and an ultra-expanded width, laid out as a technical sheet with rules, labels and a barcode, so the plate reads as a system rather than a single font.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of University.

The specimen is a specification sheet: a rule at the top, a weight axis stated in small caps, a sample word at regular and a second at stencil, and the width named at the right. That arrangement is honest about what the family contains — five weights, a regular and a stencil construction, and a very wide default — and it lets a buyer judge the extremes in one view. The drawing is geometric at wide proportions: the counters are almost square, the C is flat-topped, and the stroke is even, which keeps the extended width readable rather than merely stretched. The palette is two colours, and the barcode and the small labels are part of the sheet's language rather than decoration.

Brand & packaging

Signage system for a workshop

A wide geometric sans with several weights gives a workshop one voice across signage and documents, and the stencil cut lets the same voice move onto equipment without a second purchase.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Build a system: the fascia in the bold at 160 mm, the directions in the regular at 40 mm, the room labels in the light at 12 pt, and the equipment stencil at 60 mm. Keep one colour and hold clear space equal to the cap height.

Pre-production check

Check the 40 mm directions at eight metres, where the extended width can make lines too long; break them. Confirm the 12 pt labels read on a door and that the stencilled equipment marks keep their bridges.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a design annual

A wide geometric face reads as a technical publication, and the weight range lets the title and the contents sit at different intensities without a second family.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 110 mm cap height across 240 mm in the bold, the subtitle in the regular at 12 pt, and the contents in the light at 9 pt with 14 pt leading. Print two colours on a matte stock and keep the rules from the sheet.

Pre-production check

Check the title at 110 mm, where the flat-topped C can read as a G; keep the aperture open. Confirm the 9 pt contents read in a shop and that the rules align to the cap height.

Classroom & school

Poster for an engineering open day

A technical sans signals a subject before the text is read, and the wide letters fill a poster without a photograph or a second display face.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 portrait: the title at 130 mm in the bold, the sessions in the regular at 20 mm, and the department in the light at 12 mm. Keep 30 mm margins and print two colours on a light ground.

Pre-production check

Check the poster at five metres, where the extended width can crowd the margins; reduce to the regular width. Confirm the 12 mm department reads at three metres and that the sessions fit without wrapping.
