Calligraphic blackletter with swashed capitals

Valentine Blackletter

Valentine Blackletter is a calligraphic blackletter in dusty rose on pale pink: broken strokes, a swashed V that curls back under the word and an ascender on the b that lifts above the cap height, softening a gothic skeleton into something romantic.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Valentine Blackletter.

The face keeps the structure of a blackletter, with the characteristic angled stroke ends and the dense vertical rhythm, but the drawing is softer than a historical textura: the strokes are wide and round-shouldered, gaps between letters are open, and the capitals are allowed to swash, with the V sweeping a loop back across the first word and the B of the second lifting into a curved horn. Because the lowercase is short and close to the capitals in width, the two words read as a single block of texture, which is what a blackletter is for, and the letters do not need tracking to hold together. The type is set on a pale pink ground with scattered hearts and confetti, gift boxes at the lower corners, and a grey tracked line beneath naming the style; the rose ink is printed at one value so the texture reads as drawn rather than shaded.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Valentine Blackletter’s stroke geometry.

Valentine

Card for a February launch

A softened blackletter looks romantic without the heaviness of a historical face, so a shop can use gothic texture on a card that is meant to be warm rather than severe.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the display word at 40 pt in one rose ink, the product line in a light serif at 10 pt with 14 pt leading, and a 3 mm rule above the small print. Keep the swash of the capital inside a 12 mm margin so it does not run to the trim.

Pre-production check

Check the swashed capital at actual size, where the thin parts of the loop can fill in on textured paper, and confirm the 10 pt serif line stays legible against the pink ground at a 4.5:1 ratio.

Wedding

Menu cover for a winter wedding

Blackletter carries a sense of ceremony, and a softened cut keeps it from reading as a metal band logo on a wedding menu where the rest of the suite is script.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the two words at 46 pt centred on a 148 by 210 mm cover, with the date in spaced caps at 9 pt beneath and a 20 mm gap above the dish list. Use one ink and let the paper tone be the only colour so the texture of the letterforms stays visible.

Pre-production check

Check the cover in the proof against the light: the blackletter's dense vertical strokes can look like a solid block at a distance, so confirm the word still reads from half a metre. Verify the 9 pt caps clear the swash loop by 5 mm.

Birthday

Banner for a gothic-themed party

A party banner needs a face that sets a mood from the doorway, and a swashed blackletter does that in two words where a plain sans would need decoration.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 700 by 300 mm: the phrase at 90 mm cap height, tracked at zero, in a deep plum ink on a pale ground, with the details in a small grotesque at 15 mm along the bottom. Keep 40 mm of clear space under the swash of the capital.

Pre-production check

Check the banner from four metres and confirm the counters of the tall letters stay open; test a small-size version of the same file for the invitation insert, where the blackletter's density can close up below 12 pt.
