Collegiate block slab
University Spirit is a collegiate block in black on cream: wide slab caps with heavy rectangular serifs, tight spacing, a flat-topped A, and a two-line stack that fills the frame with a gold star rule and a banner at the foot.

Sturdy stroke walls and open counters weed cleanly on adhesive vinyl, HTV apparel film, and cut cardstock.
Visual anatomy & craft review
The two words are stacked and centred, and the drawing is the American collegiate block rather than a western or a varsity novelty: the serifs are thick rectangles, the stems are wide, the A is flat-topped and the N has square shoulders, so the word reads as an embroidered letter jacket patch rather than as a poster face. Spacing is tight enough that the serifs of adjacent letters nearly meet, which is what produces the continuous band, and the counters remain generous so the letters stay readable at small sizes. The specimen frames the words with a gold rule and three stars above and a banner with a tracked motto below, and the background is a cream field with a graduation cap and a campus tower at the edges, so the type sits in a school context without a photograph. The whole page uses two colours, which is how this face is normally printed.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to University Spirit’s stroke geometry.
A collegiate block is the expected voice for a school event, and the heavy slab reads at a distance where a modern sans would thin out.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print 1,000 by 500 mm: the school name at 180 mm cap height in two lines, the event line in a 35 mm sans beneath, and the date at 22 mm. Keep 40 mm between the two display lines so the slab serifs never touch, and print in two flat colours.
Pre-production check
Check the gap between the stacked lines at full size, where heavy serifs on adjacent lines will collide if the leading is tighter than a quarter of the cap height. Confirm the 22 mm date reads from eight metres and that the two inks register cleanly.
A collegiate face gives merchandise the institutional weight a bookshop wants, and the tight tracking makes a short word work as a small embroidered mark.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Embroider a 60 mm chest mark: the word at 14 mm cap height with the stitch count reduced by simplifying the serifs, and the shop name in a 4 mm sans beneath. Keep the mark inside a 55 mm field so the embroidery frame clears it.
Pre-production check
Check the digitised embroidery file, where thin serif details need at least 1.2 mm of stitch width; thicken the slab serifs for the small mark. Confirm the 4 mm name line is legible at reading distance and that the mark holds on both cotton and fleece.
A collegiate block signals the institution without a logo, and the two-colour palette keeps a student magazine cheap to print while looking deliberate.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the masthead at 90 pt across 190 mm on a 216 mm cover, the issue line in a 9 pt sans beneath, and a 1 pt star rule at the foot. Keep the whole cover to two inks and leave the lower third for a single photograph.
Pre-production check
Check the masthead at 90 pt for serif collisions between the letters, where tight tracking on a slab can close the gaps entirely; add 15 units. Confirm the issue line reads at arm's length and that the rule clears the photograph by 10 mm.
