Visual anatomy & craft review
Strong Witches is a playful curly-swashed fantasy blackletter with twenty-four ligatures and fifty-one alternates: dense broken strokes with a light rhythm, curls that sprout off the shoulders and a swash set that turns a plain word into a drawn spell. The alternates only appear through specific keystrokes, and the curls are the finest element. It needs roughly 32 mm for the curl and the ligature to read, and it is best in two flat inks on cream, or one dense ink on white where the curls print as drawn lines.

A curly fantasy blackletter reads as a spell page rather than a cartoon monster, which is what a themed evening wants at the door. The curls hold at 28 mm, and two flat inks print the invitation, the labels and the plate in one order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invitation 105 x 148 mm, word 28 mm with 12 mm curl clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Candle label 60 x 40 mm, word 12 mm, 3 mm margins. Door plate 200 x 300 mm, word 60 mm, 20 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 60 x 40 mm candle label at 12 mm closes the curls into a bar and the name is unreadable by candlelight. Raise the label to 18 mm, and check one label in the actual light.
A fantasy blackletter gives a serial the look of a printed book rather than a styled page. The ligatures hold at 64 pt, and the alternates keep a repeated letter from looking mechanical.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 64 pt with 12 mm curl clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt over two columns of 82 mm, 18 mm margins. Drop cap 96 pt over three lines. Running head 12 pt.
Pre-production check
At 12 pt in the running head the curls fill and the line reads as a dot rule. Set running heads in a plain face, and proof one spread at 1:1.
A fantasy blackletter reads as a hand-set imprint rather than a modern logo. The curls hold at 26 mm in foil, and the alternates let each impression be slightly different.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Bookplate 90 x 60 mm, word 26 mm with 8 mm curl clearance, 6 mm margins. Foil block 40 x 20 mm, word 12 mm, 3 mm margin. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 16 mm, 5 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 40 x 20 mm foil block at 12 mm bridges the curls and the mark prints as a filled shape. Keep foil blocks at 18 mm and above, and test one impression before the order.
