Visual anatomy & craft review
Storybook Fantasy is a swash-capped serif for enchanted and medieval storybooks: an even serif weight with a small bracketed foot, capitals that open into curled swashes and a few terminals that finish in a drawn leaf or a small fleur. The swashes lift above the line and extend the word, so a centred title needs side clearance. It needs roughly 30 mm for the swash curl and the leaf terminal to read, and it is best in one deep ink on cream, or a fine gold foil above 44 pt where the curl edge stays sharp.

A swashed storybook serif announces a fairy-tale theme without a licensed illustration, because the lettering carries it. The curls read at 36 mm on an invite, and one deep ink prints the invite, the topper and the tags on the same cream card.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invite A6, word 36 mm with 10 mm swash clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 130 x 110 mm, word 44 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 12 mm clear. Favour tag 40 x 70 mm, word 12 mm with a 4 mm hole and 8 mm clear.
Pre-production check
A 130 mm laser-cut topper thins the swash curl under 0.8 mm and it snaps on the stick. Cut without the swash and print the curl, and test one before the set.
A swashed storybook serif reads as a printed fairy tale rather than a modern cover, which is what a small press wants on a reissue. The leaf terminals hold at 48 pt on a cover, and one deep ink keeps the curls clean on a matte laminated cover.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Cover 130 x 198 mm, title 48 pt with 10 mm swash clearance, author 16 pt, 12 mm margins. Chapter opener 24 pt, text 10/14 pt. Title page 130 x 198 mm, title 30 pt, imprint 8/11 pt.
Pre-production check
Under matte lamination at 24 pt on the chapter opener the leaf terminal fills and the word reads as a blob. Keep the face for the cover and title page, set openers in the body serif, and proof one cover.
A swashed serif suits a woodland or castle wedding because the leaf terminals carry the venue in the lettering. The curls hold at 28 pt on an invite, and one deep ink on cream prints the suite as one order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invitation 130 x 180 mm, names 28 pt with 10 mm swash clearance, details 9/13 pt, 15 mm margins. Menu 120 x 210 mm, header 18 pt, courses 9/12 pt. Place card 90 x 50 mm, name 11 pt, 4 mm margins.
Pre-production check
At 11 pt on a place card the bracketed serifs fill and the name prints as a heavy bar at the table. Set place cards at 15 pt or in a plain serif, and proof one card before the set.
