Heavy varsity slab caps

Senior Graduation

Senior Graduation is a heavy varsity slab in red on navy: very wide caps with block serifs as thick as the stems, flat tops, rectangular counters, and tight even spacing, so the pair reads as a college jersey print at its most emphatic.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Senior Graduation.

Two lines are stacked and the drawing is a college slab at maximum weight: the serifs are drawn as blocks, the stems are wide, and the counters are reduced to narrow rectangles, which is what makes the word read as a single mass at a distance. The O and the G are squared rather than round, so the letters share an outline, and the spacing is tight enough that the pair forms a band. Because the weight is extreme, the face works at display sizes only, and the specimen sets both lines large on a flat navy ground. A small rounded badge with tracked caps introduces the family above the word, and a third line in a lighter slab names the format, which is the vocabulary of a sports-apparel product rather than a type specimen.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Senior Graduation’s stroke geometry.

Classroom & school

Team banner for a graduation

A heavy varsity slab is the lettering a graduation actually uses, and the tight spacing lets a year and a class name read across a hall from thirty metres without a second line.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 1,500 by 700 mm: the year at 300 mm cap height, the class name at 120 mm, and a 10 mm border. Keep 60 mm margins and print two colours on vinyl with welded eyelets at the corners.

Pre-production check

Check the banner at thirty metres, where a narrow counter can close; keep the counters at least 8 mm wide at final size. Confirm the eyelets clear the border and that the two inks register at the sheet join.

Birthday

Shirt graphic for a graduation party

A varsity slab turns a graduation party shirt into something a class would actually wear, and the block serifs print cleanly in a one-colour screen where a thin slab would break up.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 250 mm chest graphic: the class year at 50 mm cap height, the name at 25 mm, and one ink on a light shirt. Keep the thinnest serif at 2 mm so the screen holds and place the graphic 80 mm below the collar.

Pre-production check

Check the screen at actual mesh, where a block serif under 2 mm fills; thicken it for the print. Wash-test one shirt and confirm the 25 mm name keeps its edges after five cycles.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a school yearbook

A varsity slab gives a yearbook the weight of a jersey print, and the wide caps let a school name and a year share the cover without a photograph competing for attention.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 90 mm cap height across 210 mm, the year at 140 mm, and the school name in a 14 pt slab. Print two inks on a laminated board and keep a single portrait in the lower third.

Pre-production check

Check the title at 90 mm, where tight spacing can merge the letters into a block; open it by 10 units. Confirm the 14 pt school name reads on the shelf and that the year prints cleanly on the spine.
