Outlined vintage varsity slab

School Mission

School Mission is an outlined varsity slab in white on a photograph of a campus: heavy square serifs, notched corners and flat tops drawn as a thick contour with an inner line, with small tracked notes at the edges and a bottom caption in spaced caps, so the plate reads as a college print.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of School Mission.

The two words are stacked and the drawing is a college slab rendered as an outline: the contour is thick, the inner line sits close to it, and the notches at the corners are visible in both lines, which is what makes the letters read as a two-colour screen print. Because the fill is empty, the photograph shows through the letters, and the specimen relies on that: the building behind gives the word somewhere to sit without a panel. Spacing is tight and the two lines are set to the same width, so the block fills the frame. The small notes at the left and right edges run vertically in tracked caps, which is the language of a period sports poster rather than a type specimen.

Classroom & school

Banner for a school anniversary

An outlined varsity slab reads as a printed college banner, and the hollow letters let a photograph of the building remain visible behind the type.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 1,200 by 600 mm: the name at 180 mm cap height, a 12 mm contour, and the date in a 40 mm slab. Keep 40 mm margins, print one ink on a mesh banner, and keep the inner line above 4 mm so it survives the print.

Pre-production check

Check the banner at eight metres, where the inner line can close; thicken it. Confirm the 40 mm date reads at five metres and that the type stays legible against a busy photograph behind the mesh.

Birthday

Shirt graphic for a school-leavers party

An outlined slab prints as one screen on a dark shirt, and the contour keeps the lettering readable where a filled varsity face would sit heavy.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 260 mm chest graphic: the phrase at 55 mm cap height, the year at 25 mm, and one ink plus an underlay. Keep the contour at 3 mm so the screen holds it and place the graphic 80 mm below the collar.

Pre-production check

Check the screen at actual mesh, where a 3 mm contour fills on a dark garment; add the underlay. Wash-test one shirt and confirm the year stays legible after five cycles.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a school yearbook

An outlined slab lets a yearbook cover carry the school name over a photograph without a panel, which is what makes a cover feel like a document of the year.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 90 mm cap height across 230 mm, the year at 130 mm, and the class line in a 10 pt slab. Print one ink on a laminated board and keep the photograph dark behind the type.

Pre-production check

Check the title at 90 mm, where a thin inner line can vanish on a busy background; thicken it or darken the image. Confirm the 10 pt class line reads on the shelf and that the year prints cleanly on the spine.
