Modern serif with organic rusticated details

Rustic Royale

Rustic Royale is a modern serif in black on off-white: high contrast with fine hairlines, an R whose leg curls into a ball terminal, a t with a curved top, and an e that finishes in a long tail, so the word reads as a contemporary serif with hand-drawn irregularities.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Rustic Royale.

The two words are stacked and the drawing keeps a classical skeleton while bending the details: the stems are heavy and vertical, the hairlines are fine, and the serifs are short, but the R's leg is drawn as a spiral and the t and the l carry curved entries that no conventional serif would have. Those details are the same weight as the hairlines, so they read as pen gestures rather than as decoration, and they keep the pair from looking like a stock face. The O and the C stay wide and round, which gives the word a steady rhythm, and the tracking is normal, so the quirks arrive one at a time as the eye moves across. The ground is plain off-white paper, and the caption beneath is a single line in a tracked serif, so the sample is entirely typographic and the letter details do the work.

Editorial & posters

Title for a design journal feature

A modern serif with organic details gives a feature title personality without a second typeface, and the fine hairlines read as considered typography rather than as a decorative flourish on the page.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 84 pt across 190 mm, the standfirst in a 10.5 pt serif beneath, and the byline in an 8 pt cap line at the foot. Keep 22 mm between the title and the standfirst so the curved entries have air, and print two inks on coated stock.

Pre-production check

Check the curled leg of the R at 84 pt on the press sheet, where a hairline can break under heavy ink; proof one sheet. Confirm the 10.5 pt standfirst reads at arm's length and that the byline does not sit under a descending tail.

Brand & packaging

Mark for a small design studio

A serif with one or two drawn details reads as designed rather than bought, and the heavy stems keep the mark legible on a business card and a small stamp.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the mark at 28 pt with the curled R and the tailed e enabled, and build a 12 pt version for the letterhead and a 9 mm stamp. Keep the mark one colour and leave clear space equal to half the cap height on every side.

Pre-production check

Check the 9 mm stamp, where the hairline details close into blobs; drop the tail on the stamp version. Confirm the 12 pt letterhead version reads at arm's length and that the mark holds when reversed on a dark ground.

Spring

Label for a botanical skincare line

A soft modern serif signals a botanical product without resorting to a script, and the drawn details suggest a small batch made with attention rather than a factory line.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 50 by 75 mm label: the brand at 16 pt, the product in a 7 pt serif, and the volume in 6 pt. Keep 4 mm of clear label inside the die so the curled leg is never cut, and print one ink on an uncoated cream stock.

Pre-production check

Check the 16 pt brand on the uncoated label, where a hairline can fill; proof the actual stock. Confirm the 6 pt volume reads on the bottle and that the brand does not crowd the die line on the left where the R curls.
