Visual anatomy & craft review
Rose Gard is a sharp high-contrast blackletter drawn for editorial use: fine hairlines against dense black stems, pointed diamond terminals, tight vertical rhythm and a clean baseline that lets it sit inside a column. The hairlines are the weakest element in print and the terminals are what survive at display size. It needs roughly 30 mm for the diamond terminal and the hairline to read, and it is best in one dense black on a smooth text stock, or a single dark red on cream, and it should never be reversed at small sizes.

A high-contrast blackletter reads as a printed title page rather than a modern cover, which is what an issue about craft or history wants. The dense stems give the title mass at 60 pt, and the clean baseline lets the word sit inside a narrow measure without ragged edges.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Cover 148 x 210 mm, title 60 pt with 8 mm terminal clearance, cover lines 10/14 pt, 15 mm margins. Drop cap 4 lines, text 9.5/13 pt. Running head 10 pt, 8 mm from the trim.
Pre-production check
At 10 pt the running head's hairlines disappear on an uncoated text sheet and the words read as broken marks. Set running heads at 12 pt or in a companion serif, and proof one signature at 1:1.
A sharp blackletter reads as a hand-set printer's mark rather than a studio logo, which is what a letterpress shop wants on its card. The terminals hold at 20 mm, and one black pass prints the card while a single foil line carries the box.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Card 85 x 55 mm, word 20 mm with 5 mm terminal clearance, details 7/9 pt, 5 mm margins. Box 120 x 120 x 40 mm, word 30 mm, 10 mm margins. Bookplate 90 x 60 mm, word 18 mm, 6 mm margins.
Pre-production check
On an 85 x 55 mm card pressed letterpress the hairlines fill under impression and the mark reads as a heavy gothic blob. Reduce the impression on hairlines or use the roman cut, and press one card before the run.
A high-contrast blackletter reads as a printed warning rather than a cartoon monster, which is what a quiet scare event wants. The terminals hold at 120 mm on a poster, and one black plus a spot red prints the poster, the ticket and the candle labels for one night.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Poster A2, word 120 mm with 12 mm terminal clearance, times 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Ticket 100 x 50 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm perforation. Candle label 60 x 40 mm, word 10 mm, 3 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 60 x 40 mm candle label at 10 mm closes the hairlines into a black bar with white specks and the name is unreadable by candlelight. Raise the label word to 16 mm, and check one label in the actual light before the night.
