Letterform structure
of Outline Varsity.
The face is a varsity slab converted to a line drawing: the heavy stems of an athletic block are traced as a contour of even weight, the serifs are flat and squared, the corners are cut into small octagons where the stems meet the arms, and the interior of every letter is left empty so the ground shows through. That conversion changes the face's job: it no longer carries by weight but by silhouette, so it works over a photograph or a colour field without a knockout. The letters are spaced wider than a solid varsity block, which keeps the contours from touching, and the sample shows the face twice, once as a headline and once as a tracked line, to demonstrate both uses. A small basketball hoop is drawn at the top, and the palette is navy on cream. Outline Varsity is a display face for team wear, school signage, sports posters and merchandise, and it needs capitals at a large size and enough contrast behind the outlines.
