Wide chipped block slab
Norton Vintage is a wide block slab shown in two colours on a charcoal ground: a cream line and an orange line beneath it, with rounded bowls, heavy square slabs and irregular chipped fill across every stroke, plus a dark offset shadow and tracked lines above and beneath.

Fine grain and micro-texture excel in 300 DPI print, sublimation, and screen print rather than small vinyl weeding.
Visual anatomy & craft review
The two words are stacked in different colours, which lets a buyer see the same letterforms in a light and a warm tone and judge the chipped fill against both. The drawing is a wide block slab: the bowls are rounded, the serifs are heavy and square, and the chips are cut into the letters rather than laid over them, so the face reproduces as one ink per colour with the wear built in. That construction sets a size floor, because the chips close when the letters shrink, and the plate sets the block large enough that the wear reads as print rather than as damage. The offset shadow is a second element that can be dropped, and the tracked lines above and beneath are plain.

A chipped block slab reads as a painted sign that has been up for years, which is exactly the impression a vintage shop wants to give.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Paint a 1,100 by 380 mm board: the shop at 120 mm cap height, the hours in a 24 mm slab, and a 5 mm border. Keep 25 mm margins and paint two colours on a primed board.
Pre-production check
Check the board at five metres, where the chips can read as peeling paint; keep the wear even. Confirm the 24 mm hours read at three metres and that the border survives weather.
A block slab gives a period subject its own voice, and the chips hold at thumbnail size where a speckled texture would disappear.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the title at 85 mm cap height across 200 mm, the subtitle in a 12 pt slab, and the author at 9 pt. Print two colours on a coated stock and keep the title in the upper half.
Pre-production check
Check the title at thumbnail size, where the chips can clot; keep them small. Confirm the 9 pt author survives lamination and that the title clears the trim by 12 mm.
A chipped slab prints as one screen and looks worn from the first wear, which suits a retro theme without a wash treatment.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 250 mm chest graphic: the slogan at 60 mm cap height, the year at 30 mm, and two inks with a 3 mm shadow. Keep the thinnest slab at 4 mm and place the graphic 80 mm below the collar.
Pre-production check
Check the screen at actual mesh, where a 4 mm slab can fill; thicken it. Wash-test one shirt and confirm the chips stay open after five cycles.
