College slab serif
Modern Varsity is a college slab in white on a black ground: heavy caps with block serifs, a high waist and narrow counters, set on two lines with short tracked lines above and beneath, framed by hairline rules that run the width of the plate.

Sturdy stroke walls and open counters weed cleanly on adhesive vinyl, HTV apparel film, and cut cardstock.
Visual anatomy & craft review
The two words are stacked and the drawing is a college slab: the serifs are blocks, the strokes are heavy, and the counters are narrow, which keeps the face readable on a shirt and at a distance on a banner. The plate is deliberately plain — two short tracked lines and thin rules at the top and bottom — which lets the letterforms carry the page, and that is the honest presentation for a workhorse athletic face. Because the counters are narrow, the face needs a reasonable size in small print, and the specimen sets it large enough that the waist is visible. The palette is two tones, and the rules are hairlines so they never compete with the block.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Modern Varsity’s stroke geometry.
A college slab keeps names and numbers readable at a distance, and the plain construction prints cleanly in one colour on a team sheet.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print an A3 sheet: the names at 40 mm, the numbers at 55 mm, and the fixture in a 12 mm slab. Keep 25 mm margins and print one colour on a light sheet with a rule between rows.
Pre-production check
Check the 40 mm names at three metres, where narrow counters can close; keep them above 5 mm. Confirm the 12 mm fixture reads at arm's length and that the rules stay level.
A college slab reads as a badge, and the block serifs hold in embroidery where a bracketed serif would lose its shape at small size.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the mark at 60 mm on a pennant, 25 mm on a patch and 12 mm on a card, keeping the block serifs uncut. Keep clear space equal to half the cap height on every side.
Pre-production check
Check the 25 mm patch, where a narrow counter can close in stitch; open it for embroidery. Confirm the card mark reads at arm's length and that the pennant reads at six metres.
A varsity slab prints as one screen and reads as official kit, which suits a sports-themed celebration better than a decorated face.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 260 mm chest graphic: the name at 55 mm cap height, the age at 75 mm, and one ink on a light shirt. Keep the thinnest serif at 4 mm and place the graphic 80 mm below the collar.
Pre-production check
Check the screen at actual mesh, where a 4 mm serif fills; thicken it. Wash-test one shirt and confirm the age stays legible after five cycles.
