Bold brush display with inline highlights

Mama Canvas

Mama Canvas is a bold brush display in charcoal on cream: fat rounded capitals with a slight lean, thin highlight streaks left inside each stroke, and small sparkles beside the words, so the pair reads as brush lettering on a card rather than as constructed type.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Mama Canvas.

Both words are set at large size and the drawing imitates a wide brush: the stems swell in the middle, the entries and exits are rounded, and the letters sit at slightly different heights so the baseline drifts. Inside most strokes a thin unpainted line follows the direction of the brush, which is what makes the letters look wet rather than solid, and that same line is the detail that disappears if the face is printed too small or too heavily. The A and the N are wide with flat shoulders, the M is the widest letter in the word, and the spacing is close enough that the word reads as one gesture. The ground is a plain cream card with two sparkles and a small heart rule beneath, and the two caption lines are set in a simple grotesque, so the display face carries all the character.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Mama Canvas’s stroke geometry.

Birthday

Card for a first birthday

A bold brush face reads as a hand-lettered card rather than a printed invitation, which is the tone a small family celebration wants, and the thick strokes stay legible at card size.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the word at 36 pt, the name and date in a 9 pt grotesque beneath, and one sparkle at each side. Keep 12 mm margins and print one ink on cream so the highlight streaks read as the paper showing through.

Pre-production check

Check the 36 pt word on a home printer, where the thin highlight can fill and the letters read as solid; keep the type above 30 pt for that output. Confirm the 9 pt name reads at arm's length and that the sparkles do not touch the letterforms.

Brand & packaging

Label for a small candle studio

A brush display gives a candle label the look of a hand-written note, and because the strokes are heavy it survives being printed small on a jar.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 55 mm round label: the studio name at 14 pt, the scent in a 7 pt grotesque, and the weight in 6 pt. Keep 4 mm of clear label inside the die so the descenders are never cut, and print one ink on a cream stock.

Pre-production check

Check the 14 pt name on the jar, where the highlight streaks disappear first; drop them for that size rather than thickening the stroke. Confirm the 6 pt weight reads on the curved glass and that the name stays clear of the die line.

Thank you

Insert for a gift order

A brush lettering face makes a small insert feel written rather than printed, which is the effect a shop wants when it sends a gift without a note.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 70 by 100 mm insert: the phrase at 26 pt, three lines of 8.5 pt grotesque beneath, and the shop name in 7 pt caps at the foot. Keep 10 mm margins and print on the same stock as the business card.

Pre-production check

Check the 26 pt phrase, where the round terminals can look blunt on an uncoated stock; proof one sheet. Confirm the 8.5 pt lines keep a 4.5:1 contrast and that the insert fits the envelope without folding across the type.
