Visual anatomy & craft review
Graduation is a decorative Roman display in which the letters wear mortarboard caps and the counters are inlaid with confetti: squared serifs, a firm stem, a tassel hanging from the cap of the first character and small confetti flecks inside the bowls. The cap grows the word upward and the tassel extends sideways, so the box needs clearance at both ends. It needs roughly 32 mm for the cap and the tassel to read, and it is best in one deep ink on cream and navy, or a two-colour build where the tassel takes a spot gold.

A mortarboard alphabet gives a graduation its cap without a printed illustration, which is what a school wants on the hall banner. The caps read at 90 mm, and two inks print the banner and the certificate from one artwork.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Banner 1500 x 500 mm, word 140 mm with 15 mm cap clearance, 30 mm safe edge. Certificate A4 landscape, word 60 mm, 20 mm margins. Yearbook cover 170 x 240 mm, title 44 pt, 15 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 140 mm banner letter cut from vinyl leaves the tassel as a 1 mm tail that tears at the first wind. Cut the banner without the tassel or print it, and hang one banner before the day.
A capped Roman display reads as a printed commencement programme rather than a modern headline, which is what a graduation feature wants. The caps hold at 60 pt on an opener, and the confetti inlay supplies texture in one pass.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 60 pt with 10 mm cap clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt in two columns of 82 mm, 18 mm margins and a 12 mm head. Pull quote 40 pt with 8 mm above. Section head 24 pt, 10 mm from the trim.
Pre-production check
At 24 pt on the section head the confetti inlay turns to dirt and the word looks stained. Keep the face at 40 pt and above, and proof one spread at 1:1.
A mortarboard alphabet sets a graduation party in the lettering, so the invite needs no clip art. The caps cut cleanly at 40 mm on a topper, and two inks print the invite and the topper as one set.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invite A6, word 40 mm with 10 mm cap clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 130 x 110 mm, word 44 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 14 mm clear above the caps. Card 105 x 148 mm, greeting 26 mm, note 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 130 mm topper cut through the tassel leaves a curly 0.8 mm fragment that snaps on the stick. Cut the topper without the tassel, and test one before the party.
