Loose line-art dingbats of hanging lights, baubles and tangled strings

Holiday Lights

Holiday Lights is a dingbat font that draws Christmas light garlands in one even line: bulb strings, loops of wire, rows of candles, hanging stars and sprigs of pine, all ready to be dropped between two pieces of type.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Holiday Lights.

The preview shows about twenty garlands arranged in rows on a speckled cream ground, each drawn with the same thin olive line: a simple string of pear-shaped bulbs, a looped tangle of wire, a row of candles with flames, a string of round baubles, a line of fir branches, stars hanging from a cord and a garland of leaves. The drawings are flat and even, with no shading and no perspective, so they behave like ornaments in a book rather than as illustrations, and they can be tinted in one colour without losing anything. A single label sits at the centre of the card on a dark pill, and the credit line beneath it names the designer. The strength of a set like this is repetition: a row of bulbs can be stretched along a margin, stacked to make a border, or scattered under a heading, and the consistency of the line weight is what keeps a page tidy.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Holiday Lights’s stroke geometry.

Christmas

Border for a shop's festive price list

A garland repeated along two edges gives a plain list a seasonal frame with no illustration, and the even line keeps a busy page from looking cluttered.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print an A4 price list: run the bulb garland along the head and foot at 16 pt, set the heading at 28 pt with 14 mm of clear ground beneath, and hold 10 mm from the garland to the sheet margin so the wire stays visible.

Pre-production check

Thin lines drop out on a laser printer at small sizes; print one sheet on the shop machine and check the wire before the batch.

Winter

Header for a seasonal card

The bulbs name the season without a photograph, and a single string across a card front gives a spare design enough decoration to look finished.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 120 by 170 mm card: set the greeting at 34 pt with the garland directly above at 14 pt, keep 16 mm of clear ground beneath the words before the message, and hold 12 mm from the lowest bulb to the card edge.

Pre-production check

Garlands reverse out badly on dark card; print one card on the intended stock and check the line before ordering.

Birthday

Divider for a winter birthday invite

A string of lights suits a December birthday without turning it into a Christmas card, and the plain line sits quietly between two blocks of text.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 105 by 148 mm invite: set the party details at 11 pt, place the garland at 12 pt between the two blocks with 7 mm of clear ground above and below, and hold 12 mm of margin at both sides.

Pre-production check

The looped wire tangle fills in when small; print one invite at the finished size and check the spacing of the loops.
