Visual anatomy & craft review
Deckle is a rounded typewriter and letterpress industrial slab serif: even slabbed stems with a softly rounded corner, a slightly irregular baseline that mimics pressed metal type and open counters that stay clean at small sizes. The pressed irregularity is subtle and disappears when the face is reversed or set very small. It needs roughly 20 mm for the rounded slab and the irregularity to read, and it is best in one dense black on uncoated stock, or a single ink with a deboss impression where the slab edge catches light.

A pressed typewriter slab reads as a stamped works plate rather than a designed logo, which is what a small workshop wants on a card. The slabs hold at 18 mm, and one ink prints the card and the stamp in one order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Card 85 x 55 mm, word 18 mm with 5 mm slab clearance, details 7/9 pt, 5 mm margins. Stamp 50 x 20 mm, word 8 mm, 2 mm margin. Letterhead 210 x 297 mm, word 26 mm, 20 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 50 x 20 mm rubber stamp at 8 mm fills the open counters and the mark reads as a blot. Keep stamps at 12 mm and above, and test one impression before the order.
A pressed slab gives a feature a printed-plate header rather than a typeset one, which is what a report wants at the top. The slabs hold at 22 pt against a serif body, and the open counters keep a long header legible.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Header 22 pt with 5 mm slab clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt over two columns of 82 mm, 18 mm margins. Folio line 7/9 pt, 12 mm from the trim.
Pre-production check
At 7 pt the folio line's slabs merge and the line reads as a grey rule. Set folios in the body face and keep the slab at 12 pt and above, then proof one page at 1:1.
A pressed slab reads as a shop sign rather than a school worksheet, which is what a technology room wants over its benches. The slabs hold at 16 mm on a label, and one ink prints the labels and the display in one pass.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Planner sheet A4, header 16 mm with 4 mm slab clearance, boxes 60 x 40 mm, 12 mm margins. Bench label 105 x 40 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm margins. Display 1200 x 400 mm, letters 160 mm, 20 mm margins.
Pre-production check
At 14 mm on a bench label the rounded slab closes and the word reads as a bar once it is dusty. Raise labels to 20 mm and laminate them, and print one sheet before the class set.
