Visual anatomy & craft review
Comic is a clean handwritten print sans built for speech balloons: round open bowls, a single-storey a and g, even monoline strokes and generous counters that stay legible at 8 pt inside a bubble. Because the shapes are simple and evenly spaced, the face reads on a worksheet as easily as on a label, and it prints without the ragged edges that make a textured hand look noisy at small sizes. It is a text-friendly hand rather than a display face, best in one dark colour at 9 to 14 pt.

Balloon-ready print keeps a comic theme readable to a child while the layout does the styling, which is cheaper than commissioning illustrations. Open counters survive a small A6 invite.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invite A6, body 8/11 pt, bubbles 3 mm radius with 4 mm tail, name 14 mm. Prop 300 x 200 mm on 5 mm foamex, bubble text 24 pt. Sticker 50 mm round, word 8 mm, 2 mm die margin.
Pre-production check
Text set too close to a bubble edge looks cramped and gets clipped when a sticker die cuts the shape. Keep 4 mm of bubble inside the tail and 5 mm from any die line, and check one assembled invite.
A hand that holds at 8 pt makes lettering legible at print size without a second face, which is what a small press needs. Even spacing keeps a caption column from looking wobbly.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Page 170 x 260 mm, lettering 8/11 pt in 60 mm balloons, captions 7.5/10 pt, 15 mm margins. Zine 148 x 210 mm, body 9/13 pt. Column 70 mm measure at 9/13 pt.
Pre-production check
Photocopied comic pages on 80 gsm spread ink and single-storey letters fill their counters. Print one test page on the actual copier, and if the a closes, print digitally or raise the body to 9 pt.
Simple round shapes are the easiest letters for an early reader to decode, which is why this face suits a worksheet rather than a decorative one. Its monoline weight survives a school copier.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Worksheet A4, body 12/18 pt on a 150 mm measure, 20 mm margins, answer lines 10 mm. Record card 105 x 148 mm, fields 10/14 pt. Label 70 x 30 mm, word 8 mm.
Pre-production check
Worksheets are printed double-sided and a 12 pt body on 80 gsm shows through. Increase to 90 gsm or leave the reverse of the text area blank, and check one duplex proof before the class set.
