Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Christmas Stories.

Christmas Stories is a neat monoline handwritten print sans with round lowercase bowls, tall straight stems and disconnected letters, so a line reads as careful handwriting rather than as a script or a typed page. The even weight and open counters keep it legible at planner sizes, which is the point: it is drawn to be used all year, not only in December. It needs roughly 11 pt for the round bowls to stay open in a caption, and it is at its best in charcoal on off-white or a single ink on kraft.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Christmas Stories’s stroke geometry.

Christmas

Gift tag, recipe card and family newsletter

Neat handwriting reads as a note from a person rather than a printer, which is what a family Christmas letter is imitating. The monoline weight stays clean on a 50 mm tag and the disconnected letters keep a long greeting legible at 10 pt on a card.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Tag 50 x 90 mm, name 10 mm, hole 5 mm with 6 mm clear card. Recipe card 105 x 148 mm, title 14 mm, steps 8/11 pt, 10 mm margins. Newsletter A4, body 10/14 pt, 18 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A home laser printer at 600 dpi renders a 0.3 mm monoline as a dotted line on the newsletter and the handwriting look becomes a defect. Keep the body above 9 pt or print on a 1200 dpi device, and check one page before the copies.

Winter

Seasonal planner spread, calendar card and fridge list

Even-weight handwriting reads as a filled-in planner, which is what a winter wall calendar is meant to look like before anything is written. The tall stems leave room for a pen entry beside a printed label, and one ink covers the whole planner so a reprint is cheap.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Planner 210 x 297 mm, day labels 9 pt on a 6 mm ruled pitch, header 18 pt, 15 mm margins. Calendar card 148 x 105 mm, dates 9 pt, 8 mm margins. List 105 x 210 mm, lines 7 mm apart with 10 pt labels.

Pre-production check

A 6 mm ruled pitch leaves too little room for handwriting beside a 10 pt label and the entries collide. Set labels at 9 pt with a 7 mm pitch, and check one filled-in week on the actual planner before the print.

Classroom & school

Reading diary cover, name label and notice header

A handwriting face reads as a diary a child will keep, which is what a reading record needs to look like. The monoline stays legible after a photocopy reduction, and the round bowls match the letterforms children are taught to write.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Diary 148 x 210 mm, cover 32 pt, ruled lines 8 mm apart with 8 pt labels, 15 mm margins. Label 60 x 40 mm, name 9 mm, 5 mm margins. Notice A4, header 24 pt, body 11/15 pt, 20 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A school copier at 80 percent reduction thins a monoline into a broken hairline and the diary looks damaged. Print at 100 percent, and check one copy on the classroom machine before the term starts.
