Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Christian.

Christian is a tall condensed calligraphy script with a bouncy baseline, a steep slant and loops that stack vertically instead of spreading sideways. The condensation keeps a long word inside a narrow banner or a tall board, and the bounce means the joins sit at uneven heights, so a two-line setting needs extra leading. The pen contrast is light, which is where the face fails first on cheap stock, and the vertical loops are the mark that separates it from a flat monoline script. It needs roughly 24 mm for the loop and the join to read, and it is best in one ink on white or cream, with foil reserved for sizes above 40 pt.

Practical applications

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Christian’s stroke geometry.

Spring

Easter card, garden-party invite and ribbon tag

A bouncy condensed script reads as a hand-lettered spring greeting rather than a formal engraving, which suits a family Easter card. The vertical loops keep a long greeting inside a narrow card at 22 mm, and one soft ink prints the card and the tag on the same cream stock.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card A6, greeting 22 mm with 8 mm loop clearance, note 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Invite 148 x 105 mm, word 24 mm, details 9/12 pt, 12 mm margins. Ribbon tag 30 x 80 mm, word 9 mm with a 4 mm hole and 6 mm clear.

Pre-production check

On a 30 mm ribbon tag at 9 mm the bounce drops a loop onto the punched hole and the thread cuts the letter. Raise the tag word to 14 mm or move the hole 8 mm clear, and test one tag before the set.

Christmas

Holiday card, gift tag and advent-calendar header

A bouncy script gives a Christmas card warmth without a drawn illustration, which is what a shop selling year-round needs in December. The condensed loops stack a long message inside a card at 20 mm, and one deep ink prints the card, the tag and the calendar header on the same stock.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card 105 x 148 mm, greeting 20 mm with 8 mm loop clearance, message 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Tag 50 x 90 mm, word 10 mm with a 5 mm hole and 6 mm clear. Calendar header 210 x 40 mm, word 14 mm.

Pre-production check

A 10 mm tag word closes the stacked loops into a solid ribbon and the greeting reads as a smear. Keep tags at 14 mm and above, and print one tag on the actual kraft stock before the batch.

Wedding

Save-the-date, welcome sign and place card

A condensed bouncy script fits a long couple's name inside a narrow sign where a wide flowing script would break to a second line. The bounce gives the names energy at 70 mm on a board, and one ink prints the save-the-date, the sign and the place cards from a single artwork.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Welcome board 500 x 900 mm, names 70 mm with 12 mm loop clearance, date 24 mm, 30 mm margins. Save-the-date 148 x 105 mm, names 22 mm, details 9/12 pt. Place card 90 x 50 mm, name 11 pt, 4 mm margins.

Pre-production check

An 11 pt place card drops the slanted join under 0.2 mm and the name breaks into unconnected letters. Print place cards at 14 pt for short names only, and proof one card before the set.
