Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Botany.

Botany is a decorative alphabet built from twisted nautical rope and macramé cord: each letter is a strand that knots, wraps and frays at the ends, with a visible twist running through the stroke and small tassels finishing some terminals. The twist is the readable detail, and the frayed ends are the first element to disappear. It needs roughly 36 mm for the twist and the knot to read, and it is best in one natural ink on kraft and cream, or a single deep colour on white where the twist shadows stay clean.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Botany’s stroke geometry.

Summer

Coastal-shop identity, tote print and swing tag

A rope alphabet reads as the material a coastal shop sells rather than a drawn logo, which is what a beach outfitter wants on a tote. The twist gives the name texture at 40 mm, and one natural ink prints the tote, the tag and the card on unbleached stock in a single order.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Tote print 300 x 300 mm, word 70 mm with 10 mm fray clearance, 25 mm margins. Swing tag 50 x 90 mm, word 14 mm with a 4 mm hole and 8 mm clear. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 16 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 50 x 90 mm swing tag at 14 mm frays the terminal into a stray thread that reads as a printing fault. Keep the tag at 20 mm and above, and print one tag on the actual board before the batch.

Brand & packaging

Macramé-maker identity, wrap band and box stamp

A knotted cord alphabet is the material a macramé maker works in, so a brand mark in it reads as the craft rather than a graphic about the craft. The wrap gives the name depth at 30 mm on a band, and one ink prints the band and the box stamp without a second plate.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Wrap band 300 x 60 mm, word 30 mm with 8 mm fray clearance, 6 mm margins. Box stamp 150 x 80 mm, word 40 mm, 10 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 16 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

On an 85 x 55 mm card the twist at 16 mm fills into a solid rope and the knot detail turns to noise. Raise the card word to 22 mm or use a simplified single-strand cut, and check one card before the order.

Spring

Garden-centre poster, plant tag and seed packet

A rope and cord alphabet reads as twine tied round a bundle rather than a printed garden logo, which is what a plant nursery wants in spring. The knot detail gives the poster its texture at 90 mm, and one green ink prints the poster, the tags and the seed packets on the same card stock.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A3, word 90 mm with 12 mm fray clearance, details 28 mm, 18 mm margins. Plant tag 20 x 120 mm, word 12 mm, 4 mm margins. Seed packet 90 x 120 mm, word 18 mm, 6 mm margins.

Pre-production check

On a 20 mm wooden plant tag the frayed terminal runs off the edge and the word is cut mid-thread. Use the solid companion on tags and keep the rope for paper, then make one tag before the batch.
