Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Blicker Feast.

Blicker Feast is a gritty Y2K calligraphic script whose ornate loops carry a simulated photocopier bleed, blotchy ink edges and uneven density, so a line reads as a page run through a machine twice rather than as clean calligraphy. The bleed is baked into the glyph, which means the face needs size for the blotch to read as texture, and the loops still need headroom. It needs roughly 28 mm for the bleed edge to read, and it is best in black on off-white zine stock or reversed out of a dark ground.

Editorial & posters

Zine cover, feature opener and gig flyer

Xerox-bleed script reads as a page reproduced on a machine, which is what a self-published zine is. The blotchy edge gives the cover texture without a scan, and the loops hold at 90 pt on cheap stock.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 148 x 210 mm, title 60 mm with 10 mm loop clearance, cover lines 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Opener 420 x 297 mm, headline 110 mm, body 9/13 pt. Flyer A5, word 70 mm, lineup 8/11 pt.

Pre-production check

A digital press at 300 dpi reproduces the simulated bleed as a sharp grey halo and the script looks badly scanned rather than printed. Print at 600 dpi or treat the file as an image at 400 dpi, and check one page.

Brand & packaging

Zine-shop label, merch print and cassette insert

Gritty script reads as a label that came out of a scene, which is what a small record or book shop sells. The bleed holds in a one-colour screen print on a garment, and the loops give a short name movement without a graphic.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Label 60 x 40 mm, name 9 mm, 3 mm die margin. Merch print 260 x 140 mm, word 55 mm, 40 mm margins. Cassette insert 100 x 65 mm, word 12 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 9 mm label shrinks the bleed into noise and the name reads as a smudge on a kraft sticker. Keep the label at 12 mm or use a clean script, and check one applied label before the batch.

Valentine

Gritty love zine, valentine card and sticker set

Bleeding calligraphy reads as a love letter photocopied too many times, which is what an underground valentine is. The loops carry the emotion, and the blotch turns a plain card into an artefact that feels passed hand to hand.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card 105 x 148 mm, greeting 22 mm with 8 mm loop clearance, message 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Zine 105 x 148 mm, body 9/13 pt. Sticker 60 mm round, word 10 mm, 3 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

A 60 mm round sticker cuts the loop of the first letter on the die curve and the flourish is lost. Keep the word inside a 40 mm band, and pull one sticker before the sheet.
