Thick rounded organic sans

Swing Kinder

Swing Kinder is a thick rounded sans in near-black on a pale sky: heavy strokes with soft, slightly irregular edges, wide round counters, an angled leg on the R and a curved tail on the G, so the pair reads as a friendly sign cut by hand rather than a geometric grotesque.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Swing Kinder.

Two words are stacked and the drawing is a rounded sans with organic damage built in: the stroke weight is heavy, the terminals are rounded, and the outlines bow slightly, which keeps the letters from looking machined. The counters are wide and round, so the face stays readable at banner size and at label size, and the heaviness means the words hold together as a block. The letterforms borrow from hand-cut signage: the K is wide, the R's leg kicks out, and the G carries a small curved tail, which is the detail that lifts the face above a standard rounded sans. The ground is a soft illustration of swings and clouds, and the two captions are tracked caps in a lighter grotesque, so the heavy display is the only weight on the page.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Swing Kinder’s stroke geometry.

Classroom & school

Sign for a kindergarten entrance

A thick rounded sans reads for small children and looks friendly without a mascot, and the heavy strokes stay visible on a sign that is read from a distance.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 print, laminated: the name at 70 mm cap height, the hours in a 16 mm sans, and a 5 mm border. Keep 25 mm margins and print two colours so the rounded forms do not turn into a single shape.

Pre-production check

Check the A2 behind lamination, where the softened edges can bleed; keep the outline clean for the print file. Confirm the 16 mm hours read from three metres and that the sign survives a term outdoors under a canopy.

Birthday

Banner for a second birthday

A heavy rounded face is easy to read at party distance and looks handmade, which suits a family banner that will be photographed more than it is read.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 700 by 400 mm: the name at 130 mm cap height, the age in a 45 mm rounded sans, and a 4 mm border. Keep 25 mm margins and print on a pale ground so the dark letters stay crisp in photographs.

Pre-production check

Check the banner at four metres, where an uneven stroke can look like a printing fault; keep the irregularity subtle. Confirm the 45 mm age reads at three metres and that the banner photographs without moire from the print.

Brand & packaging

Label for a children's clothing line

A thick rounded sans survives embroidery and woven labels, and the organic edges keep a small children's brand from looking like every other grocery-style label.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the brand at 18 pt on a woven label and 60 mm wide for a chest print, with a 6 pt sans descriptor at 150 units tracking. Keep the stroke above 1.2 mm so the weave holds it and allow 10 mm clear space around the mark.

Pre-production check

Check the 18 pt woven label, where a soft edge can disappear into the weave; sharpen the outline for the mill file. Confirm the 60 mm chest print survives a wash and that the descriptor stays legible on the neck label.
