Tall fantasy serif with a long swash

Starlight Rune

Starlight Rune is a tall fantasy serif in gold on navy: elongated letters with hairline joins, a long swash that runs through the middle of the block, and a drawn night sky of clouds and stars behind it.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Starlight Rune.

Two words are stacked and the face is a fantasy serif: the stems are heavy and the joins are hairlines, the ascenders are drawn very tall and end in fine points, the S and the R carry curls at the terminals, and a single swash runs from the base of the first line through the second and out to the right, tying the block together. The letters are spaced widely enough to let the background show between them, and the hairline joins give the word a filigree quality at large sizes. Behind the block a navy sky is drawn with a fine radial burst of lines, a few four-point stars, and soft clouds built from curls at the corners, all in the same blue-violet, so the type sits in the middle of the drawing. The whole composition is framed by a thin double rule. Starlight Rune is a serif for book covers, game titles, invitations and posters with a fantasy mood, and it needs a large size and a dark ground.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a fantasy novel

A tall fantasy serif gives a cover the look of a printed legend, and the swash ties the title and the subtitle into one composition.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 135 by 205 mm cover: set the title at 48 pt over two lines, keep 18 mm of clear ground beneath before the author at 11 pt, and hold 12 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

Hairline joins can drop out on a dark cover; proof one at the final size and check the thinnest strokes.

Halloween

Poster for a story night

A fantasy serif suits an evening of stories, and the gold on dark reads at a distance where a black on white poster would not.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 420 by 594 mm poster: set the title at 100 pt over two lines, keep 36 mm of clear ground beneath before the date at 20 pt, and hold 24 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

A soft gold on navy can look brown in cheap print; proof one sheet and compare it under the venue lighting.

Brand & packaging

Label for a botanical tonic

A tall serif makes a small bottle look like a curiosity, and the fine joins print cleanly on a narrow label with a dark ground.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 40 by 80 mm label: set the name at 13 pt on one line, keep 5 mm of clear ground beneath before the volume at 4 pt, and hold 3.5 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

Fine joins on a curved label will distort; print one on the real bottle and check the ends before the run.
