Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Simple Dots.

Simple Dots is a cartoon bubble display drawn as a hollow outline: each letter is a fat rounded shape with no fill, and a row of uniform polka dots sits inside the outline at regular spacing. Because the letter is an outline, the interior dots are the only thing giving it weight, and the outline is thin enough to break if the face is reversed or overprinted. It needs roughly 30 mm for the dots to read as a pattern, and it is best in one ink on white, or two inks where the dots take the second colour.

Practical applications

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Simple Dots’s stroke geometry.

Birthday

Party invite, cake topper and sweet-cone wrapper

An outlined bubble face with dots inside reads as a party balloon rather than a typeset title, which is what a small child's birthday wants. The dot pattern gives the invite its texture at 36 mm, and one ink plus a second for the dots prints the invite and the wrapper from one artwork.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invite A6, word 36 mm with 8 mm outline clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 120 x 100 mm, word 40 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 12 mm clear. Cone wrapper 120 x 120 mm, word 18 mm, 8 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A laser-cut topper drops the 0.8 mm outline under 0.5 mm inside the dot area and the letter falls apart in the machine. Cut toppers from the solid variant, and test one before the set.

Editorial & posters

Kids'-page header, activity caption and cover flash

An outline bubble with internal dots reads as hand-drawn lettering on a children's page rather than a styled masthead. The hollow construction keeps the header light over illustration at 44 pt, and the dots repeat the pattern of the activity grid underneath.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Header 44 pt with 8 mm outline clearance, body 10/14 pt, 18 mm margins. Activity caption 9/12 pt with 6 mm above. Cover flash 80 x 60 mm, word 30 pt, 6 mm margins to the trim. Poster 210 x 297 mm, header 60 pt, grid cells 40 mm.

Pre-production check

Over a printed tint the hollow letter fills optically and the dots disappear into the background colour. Set the header on white or knock out the interior, and proof one page at 1:1.

Classroom & school

Classroom display, name card and reward sticker

A hollow bubble with dots reads as a hand-made classroom poster rather than a purchased banner, which is what a primary teacher wants on the wall. The outline cuts cleanly at 120 mm from card, and the dots stay visible from the back row where a solid letter would block the neighbouring word.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Display 1200 x 400 mm, letters 160 mm with 12 mm outline clearance, 20 mm margins. Name card 105 x 75 mm, name 18 mm, 5 mm margins. Sticker 45 mm round, word 8 mm, 3 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

At 8 mm on a 45 mm sticker the dots merge with the outline and the word reads as a grey disc. Keep stickers to an initial and print the display word large, then check one sticker sheet before the class set.
