Textured tall slab

Retro Groove Stacked

Oldstone is a textured slab in off-white on a dark green ground: tall condensed slabs with heavy bracketed serifs, a worn surface that chips the edges and fills the counters at random, offered in regular and stamp, with small flanking notes and a bordered strip beneath, so the plate reads as an aged print.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Retro Groove Stacked.

The specimen sets the word large and surrounds it with a period frame: the establishment year at the left, the current year at the right, and a bordered strip beneath naming the two styles. The drawing is a condensed slab — heavy serifs, a high waist, narrow counters — and the texture is applied so it eats the outlines unevenly, which is what makes the letters read as ink on a worn plate. Because the wear is random, the face needs a decent size to stay legible, and the stamp cut shows the same skeleton with a heavier, blotchier treatment. The palette is one colour on a dark ground, and the plate keeps the type as the only element besides the frame and the small tracked captions.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Retro Groove Stacked’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Sign for a coffee roastery

A textured slab reads as a printed period label, and the tall condensed width fits a long roastery name on a narrow fascia without shrinking the height.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Paint a 1,400 by 350 mm fascia: the name at 130 mm cap height, a 5 mm minimum stroke, and the street in a 28 mm slab. Keep 35 mm margins and paint two colours on a dark board so the wear reads as texture rather than damage.

Pre-production check

Check the fascia at 130 mm, where the wear can close a narrow counter; use the regular cut. Confirm the 28 mm street reads at four metres and that the texture does not blur the silhouette at night.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a local history

A wood-type slab frames a local history as a period print, and the tall letters let a long title fit a cover width without a second line.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 95 mm cap height across 220 mm, the subtitle in a 12 pt serif, and the author at 9 pt caps. Print two colours on an uncoated stock so the wear reads as ink bite rather than a filter.

Pre-production check

Check the title at thumbnail size, where the texture reduces contrast; keep the ink solid. Confirm the 9 pt author survives lamination and that the title clears the frame by 12 mm.

Birthday

Card for a heritage birthday

A textured slab suits an older recipient better than a novelty face, and the tall letters keep a long name on one line above the details.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the name at 30 pt, the details in a 9 pt serif, and a 3 mm border. Keep 12 mm margins and print one ink on a cream card so the wear reads as print rather than as a photograph.

Pre-production check

Check the 30 pt name on a home printer, where the texture can look like a smudge; use the regular cut. Confirm the 9 pt details keep a 4.5:1 contrast and that the border clears the serifs.
