Cut-paper angular display

Mixgrund

Mixgrund is an angular display shown in white on black as a series of paper strips: capitals with uneven widths, stencil-like breaks and ragged edges, each word pasted on its own torn strip, with a small line above and two small marks at the foot.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Mixgrund.

The plate is a xerox of a paste-up: the words sit on torn strips of white, the edges are ragged and the letters have breaks that read as cuts rather than as design decisions. That construction sets a large size floor, because the breaks and the ragged edges close when the letters shrink, and it means the face is inherently a display cut for a poster rather than a text face. The small marks at the foot and the line above are product copy set in the same broken style. Because the letters are angular and irregular, the face suits a flyer, a sleeve and a shirt for a punk or experimental subject, and the ragged quality is the point rather than a defect to be cleaned.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Mixgrund’s stroke geometry.

Summer

Poster for a punk night

A cut-paper face reads as a pasted flyer, and the ragged strips suit a night that wants to look hand-made. The strips read as a paste-up.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 poster: the night at 110 mm cap height, the acts in a 20 mm cut face, and the venue at 11 mm. Keep 26 mm margins and print one colour on a dark stock.

Pre-production check

Check the A2 at five metres, where a stencil break can close; keep it above 3 mm. Confirm the 11 mm venue reads at two metres and that the strips clear the trim.

Summer

Shirt graphic for a band

A cut-paper display prints as merch, and the breaks read on a dark shirt where a clean face would look too polished. The breaks read as hand work.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 260 mm chest graphic: the band at 60 mm cap height, the album at 24 mm, and one ink on a dark shirt. Keep the narrowest break at 4 mm and place the graphic 80 mm below the collar.

Pre-production check

Check the screen at actual mesh, where a 4 mm break can fill; open it to 5 mm. Wash-test one shirt and confirm the ragged edges stay open after five cycles.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a music zine

A cut-paper title gives a zine a photocopied look, and the ragged strips carry the register without an illustration. It reads as a photocopy.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 100 mm cap height across 190 mm, the subtitle in a 9 pt sans, and the issue at 7 pt. Print one ink on an uncoated stock and keep 20 mm margins.

Pre-production check

Check the title at 100 mm, where a break can fill with ink; keep it above 1 mm. Confirm the 7 pt issue stays legible on uncoated stock and that the title clears the trim.
