Celtic knotwork display with figures

Lana

Lana is a Celtic knotwork display in black and gold: capitals whose strokes are built from interlaced knots, cat figures curled into the vertical stems, crowned finials and spiral terminals, presented inside an ornamented frame with ivy, so the plate reads as a mythic crest rather than an alphabet.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Lana.

The word is set once, large, and each letter is a construction rather than a stroke: the stems are knotwork bands that weave over and under, the finials carry small crowns, and in this specimen the letters also contain cat figures curled along the verticals, which is a decorative variant rather than the base face. The gold is applied as a gradient with a thin outline, and the whole word sits on a dark green ground with a circular knot behind it, so the layering reads as an illuminated manuscript. Below the word, a second line in a gold Celtic-flavoured serif names the face, and a plate at the bottom states the formats. The frame is built from corner knots and ivy, which closes the composition without a border rule.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Lana’s stroke geometry.

Halloween

Poster for a Celtic festival

A knotwork display carries a mythic theme in one word, and the interlaced strokes read as hand-drawn ornament at poster size where a plain celtic serif would look generic.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 portrait: the event name at 110 mm cap height, the date in an 18 mm uncial-style serif, and the venue at 12 mm. Keep 30 mm margins, print gold on a deep green, and keep the knotwork away from the small type.

Pre-production check

Check the knotwork at full size, where the over-and-under weave can close at the crossings; keep the gaps open above 3 mm. Confirm the 12 mm venue reads at three metres and that the gold holds on a dark ground after printing.

Brand & packaging

Mark for a Celtic pub

A knotwork mark reads as heritage without a shamrock cliché, and the interlaced strokes give a small pub a sign that looks hand-carved rather than printed.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Fabricate a 700 by 300 mm sign: the name at 100 mm cap height, the tagline in a 22 mm serif, and a 6 mm border knot at the corners. Keep the weave gaps at 4 mm so the sign reads at distance and paint two colours on a dark board.

Pre-production check

Check the sign at fifteen metres, where the knot detail can read as noise; simplify the weave for the fascia. Confirm the 22 mm tagline reads at four metres and that the corner knots meet the border cleanly.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a folklore collection

A knotwork display frames a folklore collection as an illuminated object, and the frame from the family gives a cover its border without a second ornament set.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 90 mm cap height across 230 mm, the subtitle in a 12 pt serif, and the editor at 9 pt caps. Print gold on deep green with a matte laminate and keep the corner knots aligned to the trim.

Pre-production check

Check the title at thumbnail size, where the interlace can blur into a dark mass; raise the gold contrast. Confirm the 9 pt editor survives the laminate and that the corner knots do not run past the trim.
