Visual anatomy & craft review
Celtic Dragon takes the rounded uncial skeleton of an Irish manuscript hand and cuts its outline into jagged, dragon-wing shapes, so the letters read as torn parchment rather than as a clean medieval revival. Bowls on the e, d and g keep the half-uncial rhythm, which means a word still scans like a manuscript even with the serration. The best weight of detail sits between 18 and 60 mm; below that the serrations fill into a rough blob, and above it they look like a deliberate fantasy texture. It is a display face for atmosphere, not for long copy.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Celtic Dragon’s stroke geometry.
Serrated uncial letters read as hand-cut on a parchment map rather than typeset over it, which keeps a fantasy setting coherent when the cartography is illustrated. The manuscript skeleton is legible enough for a region name that players will actually look up mid-session.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Map label 120 x 40 mm, name 14 mm, 8 mm margin from any drawn coastline. Booklet A5, 12 pages, chapter heads 20 pt, body 9/13 pt in a plain serif. Tavern menu 148 x 210 mm, heading 24 pt, items 8.5/12 pt with 3 mm dot leaders.
Pre-production check
Map legends are usually printed at A3 and folded to A4, so a 14 mm name on the flat sheet becomes 10 mm on the fold. Check the label against the fold lines before placing it, and keep 8 mm clear of the crease or the serrations crack there.
Torn edges and manuscript bowls give a faire banner the look of something hung from a tent frame for years, which is the atmosphere visitors come for. The rounded uncial forms stay readable at banner distance even when the fabric weave eats the smaller serrations.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Banner 1200 x 600 mm on 260 gsm banner vinyl, name 150 mm cap-height, 80 mm margins, three grommets per edge. Scroll 148 x 420 mm on parchment stock, heading 22 mm, hand-written body area 60 mm clear. Goblet wrap 80 x 200 mm, name 14 mm.
Pre-production check
Banner vinyl prints at 720 dpi and the serrated outline can band into stair-steps at 150 mm. Request a 300 mm crops proof at final size and check the edges for stepping before the run, since the text cannot be scaled down afterwards.
A weathered manuscript hand suits a harvest market where everything else is either a chalkboard or a modern sans, and it reads as a period detail rather than a novelty. Rounded bowls keep a short product name legible at 9 mm on a bottle neck where a fully blackletter face would knot up.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Sign 600 x 400 mm, name 90 mm, 40 mm margins. Cider label 70 x 95 mm, name 12 mm, abv line 4.5 pt, 5 mm clear of the top arc. Price card 100 x 70 mm, item 9 mm, price 7 mm aligned to a 6 mm right column.
Pre-production check
Bottle labels go through a cooler and condensation; uncoated stock with a matte laminate under 12 mm lettering loses the serration and reads as smudge. Specify a matt synthetic label and check one chilled bottle for a day before approving.
