Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Chicano Style.

Chicano Style is a bold angular display cut from the chisel-tip marker alphabet of street tags: flat tops, clipped corners, one heavy uniform stroke and no connecting strokes, so it reads as graffiti lettering rather than calligraphy. The blade-cut terminals leave narrow white counters, which means the face needs size before the gaps survive ink spread. It needs roughly 30 mm for the chisel corners and counter slots to read, and it is best in black or one saturated ink on white and kraft.

Editorial & posters

Zine cover, poster spread and headline slab

A chisel-tag display reads as the voice of a music zine rather than a magazine, which is what a two-colour issue needs on its cover. The clipped counters give the headline aggression at 72 pt without an illustration, and the flat terminals stack cleanly into a tight masthead block.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 210 x 297 mm, masthead 96 pt with 10 mm counter clearance, cover lines 10/14 pt, 18 mm margins and 10 mm trim. Spread 420 x 297 mm, headline 72 pt, body 9/13 pt in two columns. Insert A5, word 44 pt, 15 mm margins.

Pre-production check

At 44 pt on uncoated stock the narrow counter in the A fills and the letter reads as a solid wedge. Keep display use at 60 pt or above, and pull one proof at 1:1 before the run.

Brand & packaging

Skate-shop identity, sticker sheet and tape label

Tag lettering is the honest mark for a skate shop, because the customers already write in this alphabet. The squared forms survive a 40 mm die-cut sticker and a strip of packing tape, and one ink prints the whole identity set on white vinyl without a second pass.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Sticker 70 x 70 mm, word 22 mm with 4 mm die margin. Tape label 50 x 30 mm, word 10 mm, 3 mm margins. Deck graphic 200 x 500 mm, word 90 mm, 15 mm edge clearance.

Pre-production check

A die-cut sticker at 22 mm leaves a 0.8 mm web between the counter slot and the trim and the blade tears it. Widen the die margin to 4 mm or print the sticker as a square, then cut one sheet before the batch.

Summer

Street-festival poster, stall banner and crew shirt

A heavy chisel display reads as a hand-painted festival poster, which is what a summer street fair hangs on a fence. The bold stroke holds from across a road at 120 mm, and a single screen prints the poster, the banner and the crew shirt from one separation.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, headline 160 mm, date block 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Banner 2000 x 600 mm, word 260 mm, 40 mm safe edge for the eyelets. Shirt front 280 x 350 mm, word 90 mm across the chest.

Pre-production check

Plastisol on a cotton shirt bridges the 1.5 mm counter slot of the clipped C and the letter fills after two washes. Request a 2 mm minimum gap on the screen or drop the word to the shirt back, and wash one sample before the order.
