Letterform structure
of Chicago Outline.

Chicago Outline is a collegiate varsity slab drawn as a hollow inline: a thick block letter with a fine rule running inside the contour, plus a weathered edge that chips the outer line. The inline needs clear space on both sides, and because the whole letter is an outline it disappears when reversed at small sizes. It needs roughly 34 mm for the inline rule to read as a line, and it is best in one dark ink on light stock, or a two-colour build where the inline is bare paper.

Varsity jacket patch, gym banner and yearbook cover

A hollow inline varsity slab is the lettering already embroidered on a school jacket, so a gym banner in it matches the kit rather than fighting it. The inline gives the school name depth at 80 mm, and one thread colour covers the patch while the same artwork prints the banner and the cover.

Jacket patch 90 x 60 mm, word 22 mm, 4 mm edge margin. Gym banner 1800 x 600 mm, word 180 mm with 15 mm inline clearance, 40 mm safe edge. Yearbook cover 170 x 240 mm, title 40 pt, 15 mm margins.

Pre-production check

At 22 mm on an embroidered patch the 0.9 mm inline stitches shut and the letter fills solid. Keep patch lettering at 30 mm or above, and approve one embroidered patch before the order.

Collegiate brand tag, cap print and shop window

A hollow inline slab reads as a college-supply label rather than a fashion logo, which is what a campus shop wants on its tags. The inline gives the mark depth at 26 mm on a woven tag, and one ink prints the window decal and the card from the same file.

Woven tag 50 x 25 mm, word 10 mm, 2 mm margin. Cap print 60 mm wide, word 20 mm, 5 mm margin. Window decal 800 x 400 mm, word 120 mm with 12 mm inline clearance, 25 mm edge clearance.

Pre-production check

A 50 x 25 mm woven tag at 10 mm cannot carry the inline and the word stitches as a solid bar. Use a printed tag or the single-outline cut, and check one tag before the run.

Summer

Summer-camp banner, cabin sign and shirt print

A hollow inline slab reads as a camp banner painted years ago, which is what a summer camp wants over its dining hall. The inline holds at 150 mm across a banner, and one ink prints the banner, the cabin signs and the shirt in a single order for the whole site.

Pre-production check

A 260 mm banner letter cut from vinyl leaves a 1.2 mm inline island that peels at the first wind. Use printed banner stock or merge the inline at that size, and hang one banner before the season.
