Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Champion Jersey.

Champion Jersey is a tall extra-condensed athletic slab with heavy squared serifs, deep notches on the crossbars and proportions pulled vertically so a long name fits one line on a shirt back. The slabs are thick enough to cut and to print, and the condensed stance is what makes it a jersey face rather than a poster face. It needs roughly 20 mm for the notches to stay open and 60 mm for a shirt back, and it is best in two athletic colours on white or in one ink on a pastel ground.

Classroom & school

Team shirt back, varsity jacket and gym banner

An extra-condensed athletic slab is the letterform a school sports kit is built on, so a long school name fits across a shirt back without shrinking the letter height. The deep notches read clearly at 60 mm and the slabs survive a heat transfer on a knit.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Shirt back 300 x 100 mm, letters 70 mm, 30 mm from the collar seam. Jacket back 260 x 200 mm, word 80 mm. Banner 2000 x 600 mm, word 340 mm, 120 mm margins with eyelets every 500 mm.

Pre-production check

A heat-transfer at 70 mm traps the 1.5 mm notch and the letter fills, so the team name looks like a plain block from the stands. Keep notches at 2 mm minimum on the transfer artwork, and weed one name before the kit order.

Brand & packaging

Sports-label packaging, gym merch and coach's card

Condensed athletic slabs read as a performance brand, which is what a small gym prints on merch and a coach's card. The narrow stance fits a long studio name on a 60 mm carton edge, and the heavy slabs stay visible in one colour on a garment.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Carton 60 x 140 x 30 mm, name 18 mm, weight 5 pt, 8 mm margins. Merch print 240 x 100 mm, word 45 mm, 40 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, name 10 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 5 pt weight line in an extra-condensed slab on a narrow carton face closes its counters and reads as a barcode. Keep the fine print in a wider sans, and check one assembled carton before the order.

Summer

Summer-league kit, field sign and trophy plate

Jersey slabs read as a league identity, which is what a summer competition prints on field signage and a plate. The condensed forms carry a long club name on a 900 mm sign in one vinyl colour, and the slabs engrave cleanly at 9 mm.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Sign 900 x 400 mm, word 150 mm, 60 mm margins. Plate 140 x 40 mm, word 10 mm with 3 mm engraving margin. Kit print 280 x 120 mm, word 60 mm, 40 mm margins.

Pre-production check

An engraved plate cuts an extra-condensed letter with a 0.8 mm stem and the cutter chips the serif off the end. Specify a 1.2 mm minimum stem on the engraving file, and inspect one finished plate.
