Visual anatomy & craft review
Banxors is a thorned heritage blackletter display: dense broken strokes with heavy vertical rhythm, sharp thorn spurs rising off the shoulders and a small diamond in the counters. The thorns break the silhouette and close first at small sizes, and the diamond fills before the stroke thins. It needs roughly 34 mm for the thorn and the diamond to read, and it is best in one dense black on cream, or a single dark ink on a tinted ground where the thorns only survive at large sizes.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Banxors’s stroke geometry.
A thorned blackletter reads as a heritage brewery mark rather than a modern logo. The thorns hold at 26 mm on a label, and one ink prints the label and the carton in one order.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Bottle label 100 x 70 mm, word 26 mm with 8 mm thorn clearance, legal line 6/8 pt, 5 mm margins. Carton print 200 x 150 mm, word 40 mm, 12 mm margins. Card 85 x 55 mm, word 14 mm, 5 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 100 x 70 mm label wrapped on a curve pulls the thorns past the die line and the blade clips them. Pull the word in 5 mm, and check one label on an empty bottle before the run.
A thorned blackletter reads as a period invitation rather than a cartoon monster. The thorns hold at 28 mm, and one ink prints the invitation, the labels and the plate in one pass.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Invitation 105 x 148 mm, word 28 mm with 10 mm thorn clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Candle label 60 x 40 mm, word 10 mm, 3 mm margins. Door plate 200 x 300 mm, word 60 mm, 20 mm margins.
Pre-production check
A 60 x 40 mm candle label at 10 mm closes the thorns into a black bar and the name is unreadable by candlelight. Raise the label to 16 mm, and check one label in the actual light.
A thorned blackletter gives a dark serial the look of a printed chapbook rather than a styled page. The thorns hold at 64 pt, and one dense ink keeps them crisp on uncoated paper.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 64 pt with 10 mm thorn clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt, 18 mm margins. Drop cap 96 pt over three lines. Running head 12 pt, 12 mm from the trim.
Pre-production check
At 12 pt in the running head the diamond counters fill and the line reads as a dot rule. Set running heads in a plain face, and proof one spread at 1:1.
