Whimsical handwritten Halloween face

Witchy Brew

Witchy Brew is a handwritten Halloween face in charcoal on a pale plaster ground: tall thin letters with curled finials, small spirals set on the stems, and a lowercase that mixes narrow and wide forms, so the word reads as a witch's handwriting rather than as a display face.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Witchy Brew.

The two words are set on one line and the drawing is a thin, deliberate hand: the stems are narrow and tall, several letters carry small curls at the top and bottom, and the y drops a descender that spirals rather than tapers, which is the detail that places the face in the Halloween register without a gothic skeleton. The stroke weight is constant and light, so the face works best above about 24 pt, and the letters are spaced openly to let the curls read separately. The ground is a pale, mottled plaster wall with two bats casting soft shadows, and the caption beneath is set in the same hand at a much smaller size, which shows how far down the face can go before the curls close up.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Witchy Brew’s stroke geometry.

Halloween

Invitation for a small Halloween supper

A thin whimsical hand sets a Halloween tone without the cartoon heaviness of most seasonal faces, which suits a grown-up supper rather than a children's party.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the phrase at 30 pt, the details in a 9 pt serif beneath, and a single bat illustration at the corner. Keep 15 mm margins and print in one ink on a warm cream so the thin curls stay sharp.

Pre-production check

Check the curls at 30 pt on the card stock, where a spiral under 0.5 mm fills in; thicken the finials slightly for print. Confirm the 9 pt details read at arm's length and that the descending spiral clears the trim.

Birthday

Label set for a Halloween table

A handwritten face makes place cards and jar labels feel made for the evening, and the thin stroke keeps a small label from looking crowded.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print 60 by 40 mm place cards: the name at 16 pt, the dish at 9 pt in the same hand, and a 2 mm rule at the foot. Keep 6 mm margins so the curls stay clear of the cut edge.

Pre-production check

Check the 16 pt name at actual size, where the curls can touch the neighbouring letter; open the tracking. Confirm the 9 pt dish line reads at arm's length and that the rule does not cross a descender.

Brand & packaging

Label for a seasonal cordial

A thin hand-written label gives a small-batch cordial a handmade feel for the season, and the light stroke prints cleanly on a paper label.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 50 by 80 mm label: the name at 18 pt, the flavour in a 7 pt serif, and the volume in 6 pt. Keep 4 mm of clear space inside the die so the spiral descender is never cut, and print one ink on a pale stock.

Pre-production check

Check the 18 pt name on the label, where a light stroke can break in the paper texture; proof on the actual stock. Confirm the 6 pt volume reads on the bottle and that the spiral clears the die line.
