Engraved blackletter with loops
Underdove is a thin blackletter in navy on a faded sepia print of a sailing ship: narrow letters with extended loops and internal curls, a long sweeping swash under the word, and small engraved details, framed by a bottom band that lists the features and a small gothic stamp at the left.

Visual anatomy & craft review
The plate is a Victorian engraving, and the type belongs to the same print culture: the letters are thin, the loops extend well beyond the bodies, and a swash sweeps beneath the word, so the block reads as an engraved title rather than as a text face. That construction sets a large size floor, because the loops and the curls close when the letters shrink, and the placement over a fine etching shows that the navy holds against a light, detailed background. The band along the foot is genuine product copy that names the character set and the alternates. It suits a cover, a label and a certificate for a historical subject.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Underdove’s stroke geometry.
An engraved blackletter frames a maritime cover, and the extended loops hold over an etching where a modern gothic would look anachronistic.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the title at 85 mm cap height across 180 mm, the author in a 12 pt serif, and the imprint at 8 pt. Print two colours on a textured stock and keep 22 mm margins at the head.
Pre-production check
Check the title at 85 mm, where a loop can clot; keep the counters open. Confirm the 8 pt imprint survives lamination and that the swash clears the trim by 10 mm.
An engraved face gives a certificate a printed register, and the swash gives the names a single ornamental line. The swash carries the names.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
A4 certificate: the names at 36 mm cap height, the date at 13 pt, and the seal at 45 mm. Keep 20 mm margins, print two colours on a heavy card and rule a hairline border 10 mm inside the trim.
Pre-production check
Check the 36 mm names, where a loop can merge with the swash; allow 6 mm. Confirm the 13 pt date reads at arm's length and that the names clear the border by 10 mm.
An engraved label reads as a house with history, and the fine loops survive foil where a hairline face would not. Foil holds the fine loops.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 60 by 90 mm label: the house at 12 pt, the expression at 8 pt, and the year at 7 pt. Keep 5 mm inside the die and keep the finest loop above 0.4 mm in foil.
Pre-production check
Check the 12 pt house in foil, where a loop can fill; keep it above 0.4 mm. Confirm the 7 pt year reads on the shelf and that the label holds in a cellar.
