High-contrast modern serif with italic companion
The Sargent is a high-contrast modern serif in roman and italic: wide-tracked light capitals, a hairline-bracket on every serif, and an italic that leans with a calligraphic tail, shown in soft window light on a plain wall.

Crisp hairline serifs shine on stationery, foil stamping, and packaging; add slight offset for small decals.
Visual anatomy & craft review
The sample composes three sizes of the same family: a small italic The, the name in wide-tracked light capitals across the middle, and a large italic Serif at the lower right that overlaps the cap line. In the capitals the contrast is severe, with thick stems and hairlines that all but vanish at the top of the letters, and the serifs are flat and lightly bracketed so they read as precision rather than flourish. The italic keeps the same contrast but adds a forward lean and a slight entry on the lower case, which gives the family a second voice for captions and pull quotes. Tracking on the capitals is generous, close to a fifth of the letter width, which is how a display didone is usually set, and the light in the mockup is a soft shadow of a window frame, so the whole page is two values and the type has to do the rest.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to The Sargent’s stroke geometry.
A contrasted serif with an italic partner covers a title and a standfirst in one family, which keeps a design annual from looking like it was set by three different hands.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the title at 84 pt in wide-tracked caps over the upper two thirds of the recto, the standfirst in the italic at 13 pt in a 60 mm column, and the page number in the roman at 9 pt. Keep the italic limited to the standfirst and captions.
Pre-production check
Check the hairlines in proof on the chosen uncoated stock, where a 0.2 pt serif can disappear; if it does, print coated or specify a slightly heavier cut of the same family. Confirm the italic standfirst still reads at 13 pt with a 17 pt leading.
A restrained contrasted serif signals tradition without a crest, and the wide tracking gives a single word the calm a professional mark needs.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the name at 30 pt in caps, tracked at 200 units, and pair it with the practice line in the italic at 9 pt on one line below, separated by a 0.5 pt rule at 12 mm. Keep the mark in one ink for stationery and reverse it for the website header.
Pre-production check
Check the reversed header at 1,200 px wide, where white hairlines on a dark plate gain weight and can merge; compare against the print proof. Confirm the 9 pt italic stays legible in the footer at mobile width and that the rule does not touch either line.
A high-contrast roman covers the formal voice and the italic covers the detail lines, so a single family sets a whole invitation suite consistently.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
A5 portrait: the couple's names at 26 pt tracked caps, the request in an 11 pt italic, and the times in 9.5 pt roman, all centred on a 28 mm margin. Print in one ink on a heavy cotton stock so the contrast reads as pressure rather than colour.
Pre-production check
Check the letterpress impression at actual size, where unbracketed hairlines below 0.4 mm will not hold depth, and confirm the 9.5 pt roman does not sit closer than 6 mm to the italic block above. Read the suite against the reply card to verify the tracking matches.
