Quirky hand-drawn display with bead terminals

Spooky Bones

Spooky Bones is a quirky hand-drawn display in black on white: tall narrow letters with ball terminals, a wobbly baseline, mixed letter widths and small bead details on the stems, presented with a pumpkin-and-mummy illustration, so the plate reads as a children's Halloween card.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Spooky Bones.

The two words are stacked and the drawing is hand lettering rather than a drawn alphabet: the strokes are even, the ends finish in small balls, and the stems waver, which keeps the face friendly. Widths vary from letter to letter, so the words read as written in sequence, and the baseline dips enough to give the pair movement without losing legibility. The bead details sit on several letters as small dots, which is the decorative gesture that makes the face memorable, and the counters stay open so the word holds at small sizes. The illustration of a mummy holding pumpkins, a spider and a web sits to the right in the same black line, and the caption beneath is set in a rounded sans so the hand-drawn face stays the only whimsical element.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Spooky Bones’s stroke geometry.

Halloween

Invitation for a children's party

A hand-drawn display reads as a party invitation rather than a scaring poster, and the open counters keep the words legible on a small card at home-print size.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the phrase at 30 pt, the details in a 9 pt rounded sans, and a small pumpkin at the foot. Keep 12 mm margins and print one ink on a white card so the bead details stay crisp.

Pre-production check

Check the 30 pt phrase, where a bead can close a counter; keep the beads above 1 mm. Confirm the 9 pt details keep a 4.5:1 contrast and that the pumpkin does not crowd the descenders.

Classroom & school

Notice for a Halloween disco

A friendly hand-drawn face attracts children without frightening them, and the even stroke photocopies far better than a textured or drippy display.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A4 print: the headline at 48 mm cap height, the times in a 10 mm sans, and a 4 mm rule. Keep 20 mm margins and print one colour on coloured paper so the notice stands out among plain sheets.

Pre-production check

Check the A4 on a copier, where a thin bead can fill; keep the beads at 2 mm at final size. Confirm the 10 mm times read at two metres and that the headline fits without wrapping.

Birthday

Cake topper cut file

A hand-drawn display with bold strokes cuts cleanly in card, and the wobble gives a topper a made-at-home quality that a polished display would lose.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cut a 150 mm topper: the name at 55 mm cap height with a 3.5 mm minimum stroke, two 3 mm tabs at the base, and 6 mm between letters so the blade clears the beads.

Pre-production check

Check the cut file at 150 mm, where a bead detail can snap in card; simplify the beads below 40 mm. Confirm the topper stands in a 200 mm cake and that the tabs stay hidden under the icing.
