Ornate swirled Halloween display

Midnight Halloween

Midnight Halloween is an ornate display in white on carved pumpkins: tall letters with hairline joins, curled finials that spiral into small commas, and a filigree treatment that turns the ascenders into hooks, so the word reads as a wrought-iron sign.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Midnight Halloween.

The two lines are stacked and share a skeleton of tall, narrow letters with fine joins, and the ornament sits on the ascenders and terminals: each one ends in a spiral, and several letters carry a hook that reaches back over the preceding letter. The strokes are heavy enough to hold at poster size but the joins are hairline, which gives the word a lacy look that suits the holiday without descending into novelty. Spacing is generous so the curls do not tangle, and the pair is centred over a carved pumpkin lit from within, which is what gives the white type its contrast. The caption beneath the words is set in a light serif, and the whole page uses two inks, so the ornament reads as the decoration.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Midnight Halloween’s stroke geometry.

Halloween

Poster for a carved-pumpkin display

An ornate swirled face suits a night event that wants elegance rather than gore, and the fine curls read from a distance while staying legible up close.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 portrait: the title at 110 mm cap height, the details in a 14 mm serif beneath, and the venue at 10 mm. Keep 30 mm margins so the curls have air, and print white on a dark ground for maximum contrast.

Pre-production check

Check the curls at full size, where a spiral under 0.5 mm fills in; thicken the finials for the poster. Confirm the 14 mm details read at three metres and that no curl reaches the trim.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a ghost-story anthology

An ornate display gives a seasonal anthology a decorative cover without an illustration, and the fine curls hold on a small trim where heavier ornament would fill in.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 70 pt on a 198 by 129 mm cover, the editor in a 9 pt serif, and a 0.5 pt rule at the foot. Print in one ink on a dark board so the curls read as engraving.

Pre-production check

Check the title at 70 pt on the paperback stock, where hairline joins can break; specify a coated stock. Confirm the 9 pt editor credit reads on the shelf and that the title holds at thumbnail size in a listing.

Brand & packaging

Label for a seasonal liqueur

An ornate label signals a limited seasonal bottling, and printing the ornament in a single ink keeps a short run affordable while the curls still read as engraved metalwork on the dark bottle.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 70 by 100 mm label: the name at 18 pt, the flavour in a 7 pt serif, and the volume in 6.5 pt. Keep the curls 5 mm clear of the die and print white on a black label for a premium look.

Pre-production check

Check the 18 pt name on the label, where the spirals can merge into the surrounding strokes; open the tracking slightly. Confirm the 6.5 pt volume reads on the curve and that the ornament survives the label's matte finish.
