Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Dora.

Dora is a nineteen-eighties synthwave display built from scanlines and wireframe depth: each letter is drawn as a stack of fine horizontal lines, with a second offset stack behind it that reads as a three-dimensional wireframe, and the top edge carries a small highlight. The scanlines are the entire design, and they close first when the face is small or printed on absorbent stock. It needs roughly 38 mm for the scanlines and the offset stack to read, and it is best in two neon inks on black, where the lines read as light bars, and never on coated stock that glares.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Dora’s stroke geometry.

Editorial & posters

Synth-culture opener, cover band and pull quote

A scanline display reads as a screen rather than a printed headline, which is what a feature about eighties technology wants at the opener. The wireframe offset gives the title depth at 72 pt on black, and two neon inks keep the lines as light rather than texture.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Opener 210 x 297 mm, title 72 pt with 12 mm scanline clearance, standfirst 11/15 pt, body 9/13 pt reversed on black, 18 mm margins. Cover band 210 x 70 mm, word 44 pt.

Pre-production check

At 44 pt on the cover band the 0.5 mm scanlines fill and the word prints as a solid bar with a moire pattern. Keep scanline use at 56 pt and above, and proof one cover at 1:1 on the actual stock.

Birthday

Eighties-party invite, cake topper and neon banner

A wireframe display sets a decade-themed birthday without a costume, because the lettering does the era at the door. The scanlines read at 40 mm on an invite, and two neon inks on black card print the invite and the banner as one set.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invite A6, word 40 mm with 10 mm scanline clearance, details 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Topper 130 x 110 mm, word 44 mm with a 6 mm stick slot and 12 mm clear. Banner 1500 x 400 mm, word 150 mm, 30 mm safe edge.

Pre-production check

A 130 mm laser-cut topper cut through the scanlines leaves loose strips that fall out of the machine. Cut the topper to the outer silhouette and print the lines, and test one before the party.

Summer

Retro-night poster, drink menu and wristband

A scanline display suits a summer retro night because the lines read as a neon sign at distance. The wireframe holds at 150 mm on a poster, and two bright inks on black print the poster, the menu and the bands in a single order.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A2, word 150 mm with 18 mm scanline clearance, details 40 mm, 20 mm margins. Menu 150 x 300 mm, header 44 mm, drinks 12 mm. Wristband 250 x 25 mm, word 8 mm, 3 mm margins.

Pre-production check

On a 250 x 25 mm wristband the scanlines merge into a grey band with no legible letter. Use a solid cut on the band and keep the display for the poster, then check one printed band before the night.
