Narrow mixed case with chamfered corners and a compact curved y descender

Cedar Way

Cedar Way sets a condensed bold sans in cream over a blurred warm scene, its letters narrow, its terminals cut flat and its x-height tall enough that the words fill the frame without extra size.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Cedar Way.

The name runs in one line of mixed case, the C and the d drawing tight curves, the e and the a keeping small open apertures and the y ending in a straight diagonal tail. Strokes hold an even weight, so the condensed proportions do the work rather than a change of thickness, and the spacing stays close without touching. Two tracked captions frame the word in a light face. This is a working condensed sans: it fits long names into narrow spaces, it survives a vinyl cut, and it does not look eccentric, which is exactly why signage and packaging reach for it.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Cedar Way’s stroke geometry.

Editorial & posters

Heading for a narrow column

The condensed forms fit a long headline into a tight measure, and the tall x-height keeps the line readable at a modest size.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 148 by 210 mm page: set the heading at 44 pt across three lines, keep 16 mm of clear ground beneath before the standfirst at 10 pt, and keep 14 mm of margin from the text block on each side.

Pre-production check

Condensed settings take more words per line; check the longest heading before the page is set.

Autumn

Sign for a woodland visitor centre

The narrow letters fit a tall sign post, and the even weight stays readable in low autumn light against a dark painted board.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 300 by 700 mm post sign: set the centre name at 54 mm on one row, keep 22 mm of clear ground beneath before the opening times at 14 mm, and keep 26 mm of border so the terminals keep their edge.

Pre-production check

Painted edges blur on routed board; check a mask proof before the sign is cut. Request a proof on the actual stock before signing off.

Brand & packaging

Label for a bottled cider

The condensed weight fits a slim bottle, and the cream on a dark label reads under bar lighting where a thin face would vanish.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 45 by 110 mm wrap label: set the product at 17 pt on one row, keep 9 mm of clear ground beneath before the strength at 5 pt, and keep 6 mm of clear area at each side of the wrap.

Pre-production check

Curved stock squeezes long words; check a wrapped mock-up before the label print. Order one sample before committing to the run.
