Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Alidin.

Alidin is a modern medieval display serif that keeps the broad-nib calligraphic curves of an uncial, including an arched A swash, but polishes the contours so a word reads as contemporary rather than as a manuscript reproduction. Mixed case works because the lowercase keeps the same nib logic, and the arch on the A extends above the cap line. It needs roughly 26 mm for the arched swash to read as deliberate, and it is best in deep forest or charcoal on warm ivory, or as a single spot on a dark ground.

Brand & packaging

Craft-workshop label, mead bottle and leather-goods card

Calligraphic uncial forms read as a house mark from a long-established trade, which is what a mead or leather workshop wants. The polished contours print cleanly in a spot ink on textured stock, and the arched A gives a short brand name a single memorable letter.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Bottle label 70 x 95 mm, name 16 mm with 5 mm arch clearance, 5 mm top arc and 4 mm die margin. Card 85 x 55 mm, name 10 mm, role 5.5 pt. Carton 90 x 130 x 60 mm, word 24 mm, 10 mm margins.

Pre-production check

An arched A on a curved bottle label fixes the label's rotation, and a 2 mm placement error tilts the arch. Print a 5 mm registration tick, and check one applied label on a filled bottle before the batch.

Editorial & posters

History title cover, manuscript opener and exhibition panel

Modern medieval letterforms read as a period title without imitating a manuscript page, which is what a history list wants. The mixed case holds a long subtitle in one line, and the polished curves survive uncoated offset where a rough uncial would mud.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cover 152 x 229 mm, title 58 pt, subtitle 12/16 pt, 18 mm margins and 10 mm trim. Opener 420 x 297 mm, chapter 84 mm, body 10/15 pt. Panel 1200 x 800 mm, title 200 mm, notes 18/24 pt.

Pre-production check

Uncoated text stock at 90 gsm shows the hairlines of the uncial curve as a dotted edge at 12 pt, and the subtitle looks printed badly. Keep subtitles in a companion serif and this face above 24 pt, and check one printed signature.

Wedding

Historic-venue invitation, order of service and signage

Calligraphic medieval forms suit a stone church or a castle venue, where a modern sans would look out of place. The arch on the A gives the couple a crest-like initial, and the mixed case lets the details share the same voice as the names at 9 pt.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invitation 130 x 180 mm, names 28 mm with 6 mm arch clearance, details 9/13 pt, 15 mm margins. Service 105 x 148 mm, heading 16 pt, text 8/11 pt. Sign 600 x 900 mm, names 90 mm, 25 mm frame clearance.

Pre-production check

A stone-venue sign is printed on foamex and mounted outdoors, and a warm ivory word on stone grey loses contrast in overcast light. Use a dark ink with a pale ground, and check one mounted sign at the venue before the day.
