Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Softest Petal.

Softest sits above Petal, and the lettering is a fat connected script: the S opens with a broad curve, the o and the e are wide, the f and the t carry short ascenders and the l and the t cross tightly, so the two words read as one warm block. The stroke is heavy and even with rounded terminals, the joins are tight and there is almost no contrast, which is what makes the script look brushed rather than written. The words sit on a pale pink wavy panel that floats on a blue striped ground, and the studio name is set vertically in white along both edges of the panel. The face is a warm packaging script for food and cosmetics: the heavy weight survives small sizes and cutting, and the rounded shapes suit a friendly product voice.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Softest Petal’s stroke geometry.

Wedding

Sign for a relaxed reception

A fat rounded script reads as hand-painted signage rather than a printed card, and the friendly shapes suit a party rather than a ceremony.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 450 by 300 mm board: set the greeting at 80 pt across two rows, keep 22 mm of clear ground beneath before the names at 20 pt, and hold 20 mm of border on all four sides.

Pre-production check

Very fat strokes can look like a logo at board size; print one at the final size and check the words still read in order before the set.

Label for a jar of jam

The heavy stroke holds at a small jar-label size, and the warm ink suits the colour of the preserve showing through the glass.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 60 mm round label: set the flavour at 14 pt on one row, keep 6 mm of clear ground between the letters and the rim, and leave 7 mm beneath for the weight at 4.5 pt.

Pre-production check

Fat letters crowd a round die; print one at the real size and check the outer letters before the order.

Tag for a baked gift

A warm script on a small tag turns a wrapped homemade loaf into a present, and the fat rounded shapes still read cleanly at twelve points.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 45 by 80 mm tag: set the greeting at 12 pt on one row, keep 5 mm of clear ground beneath before the name at 6 pt, and hold 4 mm from the lowest loop to the punch hole.

Pre-production check

Heavy counters fill in badly on a kraft tag; print one at the real size, punch it and check the letters before the order.
