Serif and quill script duo
The Old String is a duo in soft grey-brown on cream: a wide classical serif in caps for the main line, a quill script with fine hairlines and long tails for the second, and small tracked notes between hairline rules, with the script repeated at the foot in a smaller size.

Visual anatomy & craft review
The plate is a bookish composition: the serif carries the title, the script carries the descriptive line, and the same script reappears at the foot at a smaller size, which shows that the pair works at two scales. The serif is wide with fine serifs and a high waist, and the quill script is drawn with a pointed pen — swelling downstrokes, hairline upstrokes and a long tail — so the two voices read as a period book rather than a wedding suite. Because the script's hairlines are fine, the plate shows it on a plain cream ground, which is a fair test of its limits. The palette is one ink, and the hairline rules are the only ornament.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Old String’s stroke geometry.
A serif and a quill script cover the names and the details in one purchase, and the script's fine hairlines survive letterpress on a heavy card.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
A5 invitation: the names in the script at 28 pt, the request in the serif at 10 pt, and the date at 9 pt caps. Keep 22 mm margins, leave 10 mm for the tails, and letterpress one ink on a cotton card.
Pre-production check
Check the 28 pt script names in letterpress, where hairlines can sink; proof on the stock. Confirm the 10 pt request reads at arm's length and that the tails clear the trim.
A wide serif reads as a book cover, and the quill script lets a subtitle carry a hand-written tone without a second family.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the title at 85 mm cap height across 200 mm in the serif, the subtitle in the script at 18 pt, and the author at 8 pt. Print one ink on a cream stock and keep a hairline rule beneath the title.
Pre-production check
Check the 18 pt script subtitle, where a hairline join can break on press; keep it above 0.25 mm. Confirm the 8 pt author survives lamination and that the title clears the trim by 12 mm.
A serif and quill script give a small producer a period label, and the two voices let a product name and a descriptor sit at different levels without a third family.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 60 by 90 mm label: the product in the serif at 14 pt, the descriptor in the script at 9 pt, and the weight in a 6 pt serif. Keep 4 mm inside the die and print one ink on a cream stock.
Pre-production check
Check the 9 pt script on a small label, where hairlines can fill; keep the size at or above 9 pt. Confirm the 6 pt weight reads on the shelf and that the die clears the tails.
