High-contrast serif with swash descender

Making

Making is an elegant serif in cream on a dark portrait: high contrast with fine hairlines, sharp unbracketed serifs, a tall narrow waist, and a g whose descender opens into a long swash that runs under the word, so the plate reads as a fashion campaign rather than a book face.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Making.

The word is set once, wide, and the drawing is a contrasted serif at display scale: the stems are heavy, the hairlines are fine, and the serifs are flat and sharp, which gives the letters an engraved quality. The g is the signature: its descender leaves the bowl and sweeps to the right in a long curve, closing the word and giving the composition a base. Spacing is even and tight, so the word reads as a plate, and the hairlines require a large size, which the specimen provides by setting the word across the frame. Two small tracked credits sit at the corners and a line beneath names the studio, so the plate reads as a brand presentation, and the dark photograph keeps the hairlines crisp against the ground.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Making’s stroke geometry.

Brand & packaging

Mark for a fashion label

A contrasted serif with one long swash gives a label a mark that reads as luxury at a small size, and the swash supplies the signature that a plain wordmark lacks.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the mark at 28 pt on a label and 120 mm wide on a shopfront. Keep one colour, allow 6 mm clear under the swash at label size, and shorten the swash for versions below 16 pt.

Pre-production check

Check the 16 pt label, where the hairlines can drop below 0.2 mm; raise the size or use the shortened cut. Confirm the shopfront version weeds cleanly at 120 mm and that the swash does not crowd the descriptor.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a design monograph

A contrasted serif gives a monograph an editorial authority, and the swash descender lets a short title fill a cover without a second graphic element.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 120 mm cap height across 230 mm, the subtitle in a 10 pt serif, and the publisher at 8 pt. Keep the title in the upper half over a dark image and let the swash run into the lower third.

Pre-production check

Check the title at thumbnail size, where the hairlines can vanish; keep the cream at full strength. Confirm the 10 pt subtitle reads in a shop and that the swash does not cross the publisher line.

Wedding

Stationery for a modern wedding

A contrasted serif reads as formal without a script, which suits a modern wedding, and the swash gives the invitation a signature line instead of an ornament.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A5 invitation: the names at 24 pt, the request in a 10 pt serif, and the date at 9 pt caps. Keep 22 mm margins, leave 10 mm clear under the swash, and letterpress one ink on a heavy card.

Pre-production check

Check the 24 pt names on cotton stock, where the hairlines can sink; proof the plate. Confirm the 10 pt request reads at arm's length and that the swash clears the trim on both sides.
