High-contrast didone with hairline serifs
Vogue is a high-contrast didone serif in white over a black-and-white beauty photograph: hairline serifs, a very thin crossbar on the A, a round O and a G with a fine spur, set in capitals as a magazine masthead.

Visual anatomy & craft review
The word is set in large capitals across a black and white photograph of two faces, and the face is a didone: the thick stems are very heavy and the thins are hairlines, the serifs are flat and unbracketed, the A carries an almost invisible crossbar, the O is a near circle with a vertical stress, the G has a small spur and the V and the E are drawn with extreme contrast. The letters are spaced wide enough to let the photograph show between them, which is what makes the word read as a masthead rather than a block, and two smaller tracked lines sit above and below in the same face. The photograph is a close crop in soft grey tones, so the type has to do all the work of separating itself from the image. Vogue is a serif for fashion and beauty covers, editorial title pages, invitations and luxury packaging, and it needs a large size, a quiet image behind it and a printer who can hold a hairline.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Vogue’s stroke geometry.
A didone masthead is the expected language of a fashion cover, and the extreme contrast keeps the title from flattening into the photograph behind it.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 230 by 300 mm cover: set the masthead at 130 pt on one line, keep 30 mm of clear ground beneath before the coverlines at 11 pt, and hold 16 mm of margin at the top and sides.
Pre-production check
Hairline serifs can break over a dark photograph; proof one cover at the final size and check the thinnest strokes.
A high-contrast serif gives formal stationery its weight, and the wide spacing lets two long names sit on one line without crowding.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 130 by 190 mm card: set the names at 26 pt on one line, keep 20 mm of clear ground beneath before the details at 8 pt, and hold 15 mm of margin on all four sides.
Pre-production check
Letterpress will squeeze a hairline serif; order one proof in the real process and check the fine strokes before the run.
A didone label is what a premium bottle is expected to carry, and the thin strokes suit gold foil better than a heavy face would.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 40 by 70 mm bottle label: set the name at 12 pt on one line, keep 5 mm of clear ground beneath before the volume at 3.5 pt, and hold 3.5 mm of margin on all four sides.
Pre-production check
Gold foil on a hairline can bridge and fill; order one foil proof on the real stock before approving the label.
